Rusty’s Ramblings: Behind-the-scenes intel from a big weekend in Athens
Obviously a lot of eyes on the visit of five-star offensive tackle David Sanders and family. I am told that particular visit went a good as it could have. He brought his entire family and they spent a lot of time with Georgia commitment Mason Short and his family while in town. Those two are really close and stay in communication. Based on what I’m hearing, I think he’ll be at Tennessee this coming weekend, but he will be back in Athens with his family shortly after that. His UGA official is scheduled for the weekend of July 7. Georgia has been in this one for a long time and this weekend did not hurt their chances at all.
*** Speaking of big offensive lineman targets, I have confirmed that Stacy Searels will be in Iowa today to see Nick Brooks work out. Brooks will be in Athens this summer and remember he spent the past few years in Georgia before moving back to the Midwest.
*** Five-star linebacker Zayden Walker was also back in town and Chad Simmons had a really good update on his visit. From everything I’m hearing, this visit also went well. Georgia has been all in here for a long time, and Glenn Schumann has continued to recruit him as a top priority. When the Georgia defensive coordinator locks in a guy for this long, he doesn’t typically lose those battles. Walker and his family will be back in Athens the weekend of May 31 for a very important official visit with a July decision looming. He has a brother at South Carolina so they are not to be discounted at all, but it’s hard for me to see him end up anywhere but Athens in the end. We will see on this one as the coming weeks unfold.
*** Both CJ Wiley and Travis Smith Jr. were in town with their families. I am told that they spent a lot of time around each other this weekend. I am starting to lean more and more on both of these prospects ending up in this UGA class. Neither are near a decision, so keep that in mind, but as we enter a big month of June, I like where the Bulldogs stand with both of the in-state receiver targets in the 2025 class.
*** I think that Georgia has put itself in as good of a position as it can with 2025 running back Bo Jackson from Cleveland, Ohio. The Ohio State visit is looming on May 31 weekend and then he goes to Alabama on the June 7 weekend. This visit to Georgia went well, really well, but I want to see what the vibe is after the big in-state official visit for him and his family. They have been down to Athens several times in the last few months. They have real interest in the Bulldogs.
