“The showrunners were rushing to get Star Wars”: Game of Thrones Fans Need to Stop Blaming David Benioff’s Canceled Star Wars Trilogy For Show’s Awful Ending
The eight-seasons-long Game of Thrones series is widely regarded as one of the most popular and successful novel-based adaptations of all time, with writer cum producer David Benioff credited as one of the show’s executive producers, showrunners, and writers. But while most of the saga was a masterpiece, they somehow managed to mess up the series finale, which didn’t sit well with fans.

That being said, infuriated fans still blame Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who was the other EP, writer, and showrunner for GoT, for ruining the perfect end for their favorite lore, seemingly because of the canceled Star Wars trilogy they were supposed to tame afterward. However, many don’t seem to realize that this story also has an unexplored perspective they never really came to know.
Game of Thrones Finale Wasn’t Rushed Because of Star Wars Trilogy?
As it seems, yes, that just might be the case.
While a lot of fans seem to be under the impression that the masterpiece GoT live-action saga ended as terribly as it did because David Benioff and D.B. Weiss rushed it due to their’ deal with Disney for the canceled SW trilogy, that doesn’t seem to be the case when exploring the entire story.

First of all, the fact that Game of Thrones will end at season 8 with its last two seasons consisting of a total of 13 episodes was announced back in 2015 (via Entertainment Weekly).
In comparison, Benioff and Weiss’ deal with Disney for writing and producing a new and separate Star Wars trilogy came nearly three years later in 2018, as per Entertainment Weekly.
This means that the series finale was actually not rushed because of the EPs’ deal with Disney.

That brings us back to the deal with Disney that never really went ahead, resulting in the cancelation of the much-anticipated trilogy. But why was it canceled?

Well, the reason was simple: Benioff and Weiss went ahead to sign an exclusive multi-year film and television $200 million contract with Netflix in 2019 (as per W Magazine). This commitment eventually resulted in their leaving their previous deal with Disney for the SW lore.
All of this being said, it can’t really be said that the one thing that led to the incredibly awful ending for George R. R. Martin‘s novels’ live-action adaptation was actually the unmade SW trilogy, because it most certainly doesn’t seem to be it.

But that raises yet another question: If this wasn’t the reason, then just why did the mastermind writers Benioff and D.B. Weiss have to leave behind such a sour aftertaste with the series finale after doing such an exceptional job with the initial seasons of the show?

Truth be told, a part of the answer to this lies right in this question.
As fans already know, after exhausting the source material, the GoT live-action lore started to pine downhill somewhere around the sixth season. This hints that, just like the Change.org petition signed by 1.86 million fans claims, the EP duo were just being “woefully incompetent writers.”

Or, this could have a second perspective too, considering how Benioff claimed in his 2016 interview with Variety the reason behind cutting the series short:
It’s crossing out of a television schedule into more of a mid-range movie schedule.

Moreover, according to the same source, this was decided because the showrunners reportedly wanted more time to spend and focus on each episode. This means that the production complexity also contributed heftily to this decision.

Thus, it seems like we have already found a part of our answer about why the fan-favorite saga faced such a botched ending, with seeming incompetency, the deal with Netflix, and the production complexity apparently being some of the biggest reasons behind this failure.
That being said, fans really need to take the canceled SW trilogy off the blame hook for the same.

May 19th, 2024 officially marked the half-a-decade-old anniversary of the Game of Thrones series finale, as shared by @DiscussingFilm on X. Needless to say, this garnered a lot of negative reviews from fans, some of whom still blame SW for the terrible GoT ending, like @ChainsawReacts:
What a horrible way to do it too. They showrunners were rushing to get to Star Wars and that fell apart…
— Chainsaw Reacts (@ChainsawReacts) May 19, 2024
However, other fans are learning and realizing that this wasn’t necessarily the case, and thus, fending off all of those allegations for the same. Here are all those defense statements posted by other fans on X:
why do people still say this lol, the star wars deal came about 2 years after the final season was announced. also it "fell apart" because disney stopped doing star wars movies and they got an even bigger deal from netflix.

The point is they didn't all of a sudden decide to end got to go make star wars. They announced in 2015 it would end with 8 seasons long before Star Wars was ever a thing for them

That’s a dumb ass internet narrative that you lot keep regurgitating whenever season 8 pops up on your feed.
— Rogue Prince (@LordFleaBottom_) May 19, 2024
Not true you can dislike the ending that's fine but the said years before Star Wars it would end with 8 seasons. They didn't just all of a sudden decide to end it because of star wars

Everyone says until episode 3 it was perfect. How can smtg be perfect and then all of a sudden stop being perfect because it went the way GRRM intends to end the books and not the way ppl who rooted for Daenerys and feminism wanted?
— Matserban (@matserban) May 19, 2024
They announced in 2015 it would be 8 seasons long before Star Wars. That's narrative is just a bs lie

Well, as admittable and debatable as this topic is, it still doesn’t change the fact that the ending for one of the most remarkable live-action adaptations was brutally butchered in ways worse than one can expect, even if it wasn’t because of the canceled Star Wars trilogy.
Nonetheless, you can stream Game of Thrones on Max.
