Mark Wasikowski shares heartfelt message for Braden Montgomery, Shane Sdao after Texas A&M injuries
Texas A&M punched their tickets to Omaha and the College World Series with a 15-9 win over Oregon on Sunday night. But unfortunately in the process the Aggies lost two players to injuries, with Braden Montgomery and Shane Sdao both exiting the first innings of Games 1 and 2 of the College Station Super Regional over the weekend.
Postseason elimination is never an easy pill to swallow, but despite Oregon’s season coming to an end on Sunday, their head coach Mark Wasikowski opened up his postgame press conference with a thoughtful statement about the Aggies’ injured players.

“The first thing on my mind is Shane Sdao,” Mark Wasikowski said. “You know, having watched young guys that are super talented walk off the field with injuries is part of our lives now. Of even the guys that are sitting at this table, several guys that have done that and walked off the field and had to overcome adversity and it breaks your heart as a coach to see somebody go through that.”
The genuineness of Wasikowski’s words was evident in his remarks as the fifth-year Ducks head coach showed that he’s clearly a class act.
Montgomery was taken off of the field with an air cast around his ankle following a collision at home plate during Game 1 of this weekend’s Super Regional on Saturday. Ruled out for the remainder of the season following a standout year for the Aggies that generated plenty of MLB buzz for the outfielder.
Then on Sunday Texas A&M’s injury misfortune continued yet again in the first, with Sdao leaving the game with an elbow injury after throwing 11 pitches. As he continues to be evaluated ahead of the College World Series starting this weekend.
“You saw two very, very good players, future major leaguers that happened to this weekend in this really competitive Super Regional and my heart goes out to those two young people and their families,” Wasikowski added. “A lot of guys, the senior class that is represented here, have gone through struggles like that and it requires a lot of mental toughness and it requires a lot of grit and determination. And I really respect young people that have to go through that to be able to get to their dreams and goals.”
Wasikowski and all from the baseball community are hoping for a speedy recovery from Montgomery and Sdao, as Texas A&M will take on Florida in the College World Series this weekend in Omaha.
