A Guide To Keeping Your Cat Safe During A Heat Wave
Regions all over America have been experiencing extreme heat and heat waves that are making everyone want to stay inside.
Dog owners like myself have been seeing a lot of informational videos and graphics on our social media feeds telling us how to keep our pups safe in extreme heat. There is so much information out there, and many people fear what could happen to their dogs if they overheat.
However, have you noticed you don’t see as much information about caring for your cats in extreme heat?
Cats are just as susceptible to overheating, and while you may assume your cat will be fine as long as you have air conditioning and their water is full, you should know what to do if your power goes out or it gets even hotter.
Here are a few tips for ensuring your feline friends are safe from extreme heat this summer!
Always have a water source nearby
Like any pet, cats need to stay hydrated, and it’s especially important they have a water source at all times of the day.
Remember to be diligent about keeping your cat’s water bowls full. If you notice they’re not interested in drinking water, you can encourage them to drink by adding yummy ingredients like salt-free broth.
Cats sometimes like to have several water sources, so experiment with leaving two to three bowls around your house and keep them separate from their food and litter. You can also try purchasing a small feline water fountain or turn your kitchen tap on for them if they prefer running water.

Use cooling mats
If your cat loves sleeping in a room that gets extra hot, you can purchase cooling mats to place under their bed or favorite sleeping spot in your house. This will help keep their bodies cool, even when they’re relaxing. If you can’t find a cooling mat, you could also wrap ice packs in blankets.
Get them groomed
While cats are notorious for being able to groom themselves, long-haired and super fluffy cats may need some extra help staying cool over the summer. If your cat has a lot of fur, take them to a groomer for a subtle haircut. Even just taking off a bit of extra fur will be able to give your cat some relief from the heat.
Place their paws in cold water
If your air conditioning breaks down and you’re stuck using fans, if you notice your cat seems very hot, you can briefly dip their paws in cold water.
This helps cool down their entire body and will revitalize them. I know trying to hold a cat’s paw still, especially around water, is a challenge, but you’ll want to try it if you’re struggling to keep your home cool.
Keep them inside on certain days
If you have an indoor-outdoor cat and you get an extreme heat advisory, you should do your best to keep them inside. Try to keep them entertained inside with toys and treats and only let them out when the temperature is bearable enough.
Additionally, if your cat likes to spend time outdoors, ensure your yard or garden has plenty of shady spots for them to lounge in. If there isn’t any shade, make some using an umbrella!
Now, you have some easy tips for keeping your feline friend warm this summer. All pet owners should know what to do if their pet has to face extreme temperature changes, and it’s best to be prepared. Enjoy your summer with your furry friend!
