“There Isn’t Enough Money”: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Addresses Major Issue in Track and Field Sport
All eyes are on Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone as the Olympic sprinter finally announced her participation in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2024 U.S. Olympic trials. McLaughlin-Levrone is the current Olympic champion and world record holder in the 400m hurdle and has already set new world records in the hurdle race, shattering her own 52- and 51-second marks! But she is making headlines for another reason.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a two-time Olympic champion, is scheduled to compete in the 400m hurdles on Friday, May 31, in Atlanta. This will be her first competition in her specialty event since August 2022. She will put up action in the upcoming Edwin Moses Legends Meet 2024. Before her most anticipated performance, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone spoke with Citius Mag commentator Anderson Emerole, who took their talk on X, with the caption: “McLaughlin-Levrone on the need for better access and marketing of T&F to push it the way that we want to.”
“I feel like we don’t do a good job marketing ourselves…We need people to actually be able to see our sport and not have to pay all the time to watch subscriptions online”

As a top-tier athlete, Sydney McLaughlin is proudly sponsored by New Balance. McLaughlin pointed out, “I feel like we don’t do a good job marketing ourselves…We need people to actually be able to see our sport and not have to pay all the time to watch subscriptions online, that’s just my opinion. I think that Netflix documentaries is gonna be huge… I think there is not enough money in our sport to push it the way we really want to.”
Simply put, sports marketing, a $487+ billion global market, involves strategies to promote sports-related products, events, and brands. It focuses on raising awareness, funding, developing interest, and increasing customer interaction in the sports business. Social media is not only a medium in and of itself, but it also influences every other medium, how it is televised and streamed across the world, and how people react to what happens in real-time and afterward on every platform imaginable. While Sydney has no means of stopping her short-distance success this season, do you think the subscription theory is a problematic one?
American world record holder Sydney McLaughlin wins hearts
After a tough injury-shortened season in 2023, Sydney McLaughlin looked outstanding in the shorter sprint. The reigning Olympic champion in the 400-meter hurdles unexpectedly won the women’s 200-meter race at the LA Grand Prix in Westwood, California. She ran 22.07, a new personal best and her time is the second fastest in the world this year.

Last year, McLaughlin-Levrone focused on the flat 400 meters, winning the U.S. title in 48.74 seconds, the second-fastest time in American history. She withdrew from the 400 meters at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest just eight days before the event due to a PCL injury in her left knee.
On April 20, she participated in her team’s 4×100-meter relay at the Mt. SAC Relays, and this month, she clocked in 12.71 in the 100 m and 22.38 in the 200. Already a master of 400mH, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is all set to impress her fans both on and off tracks this Paris season.
