Microsoft is not buying Valve and Counter-Strike for £12 billion – unsurprisingly
Valve’s Gabe Newell won’t need time to think about that (Twitter)
A rumour that Microsoft wants to take over the PC market with a £12 billion acquisition of Valve is being ridiculed on social media.
According to a rumour that has spread on social media, Microsoft is continuing its video game shopping spree, just seven months after the Xbox maker bought Call Of Duty developer Activision Blizzard for £59.3 billion.
The rumour claims that Microsoft is preparing an offer to buy Steam and Counter-Strike 2 owner Valve for £12 billion.
There’s no proof or reliable source behind the rumours, but they’ve spread like wildlife anyway – despite there been no truth to them whatsoever.
DiorCS, who claims to have ‘six years in law school and seven years in finance’, started the rumour when they tweeted:
‘With approximately $80 billion CCE [Cash and cash equivalents], Microsoft is preparing an offer of $16 billion for Valve. No stock, all cash.’

The tweet has received a community note warning readers that there is no proof to this claim, and others on Twitter have slammed the rumour too.
Senior editor at The Verge, Tom Warren, said: ‘I can’t believe I have to say this but of course Microsoft isn’t ‘preparing an offer of $16 billion for Valve.’ Giving blue ticks to everyone was bad idea.’
Content creator Jake Lucky says: ‘I’ll bet my entire CS [Counter-Strike] inventory and left leg that Valve isn’t selling to Microsoft for $16 billion.’
If anyone believes Microsoft is acquiring Valve, I’ve got a bridge to sell them connected to a fantasy world where the internet doesn’t just make things up.— Dom (@DomsPlaying) May 22, 2024
Others, like Harris Dot Zone, pleads for people to stop retweeting the post, saying:
‘It’s completely made up! The figure doesn’t make any sense! Why would the largest game distributor sell for a fraction of what Activision sold for?’

Considering Valve made £800 million from selling loot boxes in Counter-Strike 2 last year, £12 billion sounds like a very low offer for not just Counter-Strike 2, but the entire storefront of Steam and everything else Valve owns.
Also, Microsoft struggled to get the Activision deal through, because UK and US monopoly investigators tried to block the acquisition. So, there’s almost zero chance such a deal would go through even if Microsoft wanted to try it.
If Microsoft bought Valve, it would own a huge portion of the PC gaming market, on top of the console market with Xbox, but since the acquisition is never going to happen it’s not something worth worrying about.
