MasterChef is back on our screens for its 20th season – and the semi-finals are fast approaching!
Gregg Wallace and John Torode will be splitting the remaining 16 chefs into two batches of eight and putting them through their paces as they battle it out for a place in Finals Week.
Working in teams, they’ll be tasked with delivering a three-course feast on a huge scale at the MasterChef 20th Anniversary Celebration Dinner, before they’ll hear their fate back at the MasterChef kitchen.
So, as the hunt for the 2024 MasterChef champion continues, read on to get know the MasterChef 2024 contestants taking part, from heats one to ten, as well as who’s set to appear in Knockout Week.

Digital Project Director has said it was wanting “to know if I’m as good as my friends and family say” that prompted her to apply for the show.
“They’re always going to be kind to you, so it would be great to hear what John, Gregg and any other professionals have to say,” she continued.
“I want food to be something I can ‘do’ in my professional life. I want to have my own supper clubs, share my recipes on my social media and share that love of food with the community. I’d love for MasterChef to be able to help be a platform to enable me to do that.”

“My parents and I were watching MasterChef last year and I joked that I’d be going on the show,” bartender Olivia said. “My dad said I should actually apply and my mum agreed!
“I’ve always tried to grasp every opportunity given to me with both hands, no matter how scary and intimidating it might be, so I took the risk and applied. I was really nervous but in life I always try to have fun, no matter how far out of my comfort zone I get, and I thought this would be a cool story to tell.”

Speaking about why she wanted to take on the challenge, Louise said: “For at least 15 years my friends and family have been badgering me to apply for MasterChef. The reason I applied this year was that I had just had my five year cancer-versary. I was diagnosed when my daughter was 18 months old and our world imploded. My diagnosis and intense treatment took a long time to come to terms with and changed me.
“A positive change was to try to embrace all of life’s opportunities fully; not to say ‘no’ to scary things or to allow the myriad nasty side effects that I live with each day to stop me from having adventures. And so, I had to apply, and I am enormously glad I did.”

Twenty-eight-year-old Brin is a Veterinary Surgeon.
Talking about why he wanted to be on the show, he said: “I applied for the series because I wanted to see how good a cook I truly am. I was very nervous about the idea of going on the show but Anna, my fiancée, really pushed me to take part as she believed I’d be able to go far.
“Friends and family had also been pushing me to apply for the show for a while as they’ve seen what I can do in the kitchen.”

“My wife believes in my culinary skills and would like to see me showcase them on a platform like MasterChef. It’s nice to know she thinks I have what it takes to excel in the competition, and it gave me that boost I needed to go for it.”

Circus artist Chris first appeared on MasterChef last year and managed to make it all the way to the quarter final. Now, he is giving it another shot.
“It’s unbelievable to be back,” Chris said. “I feel determined and focused and I’m going to really put myself on the plate this time. I want to draw on m theatre experience and elevate my presentation. I will be going all-out with rarely seen ingredients and new, bold dishes that demonstrate the chef I can be.”

Talking about why he wanted to appear on the series, he said: “I entered this competition because of my wife. She encourages and motivates me all the time. She always compliments my food and believes in me, so I thought why not!
“I got a huge confidence boost when the production team got back in touch. I never thought I’d be selected to participate and be given such an amazing opportunity to showcase the Latino dishes that I love so much.”

Speaking about why she entered MasterChef, IT teacher Fateha said: “I’ve thought about applying for MasterChef for over 10 years, after my father died in 2011. It baffled me growing up, why my father cooked Indian dishes at his restaurant and not our Bengali dishes, which are totally different in terms of flavours and use a range of fruits and vegetables unique to Bangladesh.
“I want to showcase a different type of South Asian food and the variety of Bengali dishes out there. I also wanted to challenge myself and show what my father enjoyed eating at home, that he could not cook at his restaurant. I felt like he’ll be with me throughout this surreal and once in a lifetime experience and I’m doing this as a sort of tribute to him.”

“I wanted to live the dream and see if I have what it takes,” he said ahead of his appearance. “I’m quite a quiet person, so I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone, showcase my talent and tell my story – on a plate!”

Programme director Charlotte’s earliest memory of cooking is making a toothpaste smoothie with her brother and, thankfully, her skills have come on since then!
As for why she wanted to take part in MasterChef, Charlotte explained it has always been a dream, but she put it off due to her “abject terror of being on television”.
She explained: “When I went vegan my view was: if I can inspire just one person to think about doing more plant-based food then it will be wort it. I’d rather regret the things I did do than the things I didn’t.”

Louise has adored food for as long as she can remember and was 11 years old when she first cooked for herself.
After having her children, Louise was inspired to keep pushing for what she wants and decided to enter MasterChef to follow her love of cooking and because her daughter told her to.
She said: “I’m always telling to her chase her dreams – so thought it was about time I did the same.”

Rhys enjoys cooking an array of different cuisines and has volunteered at a cookery school that supports refugees and immigrants who arrive in the UK by helping them each cookery classes from their home country.
He added: “I loved tasting all the different cuisine from Iraq to Eritrea; Sri Lanka to Nigeria. I’d always go home after class and try to copy what I’d seen the cooks do!”

“MasterChef is the pinnacle for amateur cooks and so it was natural that I wanted to give it a go,” David explained. “I’m keen to push my cooking on, learn new skills and see where I could take it.”

James isn’t a stranger to MasterChef, having taken part in the MasterChef South West and Wales competitions, reaching the regional final and has been inspired ever since!
“To have a go at MasterChef as it is today is something I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do,” he said.

Sami’s earliest MasterChef memory goes back to watching the Italian version of the series, and his perception had a complete transformation when watching it in the UK.
“Since I started watching, I’ve dreamt of being on the show and sharing my love for food with the world,” he explained.
“I think MasterChef has had a significant impact on people and the country itself. It showcases different cooking styles, recipes and flavours. The show actively inspires people to step out of their culinary comfort zones and try new things.”

After appearing on the series back in 2022, Farokh is excited to be back in the MasterChef kitchen. When viewers saw him last, he made it to the semi finals, but his pitfall was making a “difficult dish and burnt it several times”.
Lyndsay

While it feels strange to be back in the MasterChef kitchen, Lyndsay also admitted it is “really nice to see so many of the production and crew” once more.
The DJ and drummer was on the show in 2017 and made it to the semi finals.

Similarly to Chris, Matthew appeared on MasterChef in 2023 and made it to the quarter finals. He is ready to show his further knowledge of food, specifically “flavour profiles, food pairings and the experimentation aspect of different dishes”.
“I felt truly honoured to be selected to return to the MasterChef kitchen,” he said. “Thinking back to when I received the phone call, I was honestly shocked and completely lost for words. I remember thinking, ‘Why me?’ and how lucky I was to get a second opportunity in the kitchen.”

Ajay’s cooking has been heavily influenced by “the flavours of South India” and his travels across the world.
Since taking part on MasterChef in 2019, Ajay has focused on South Indian cuisine and has even set up supper clubs at home and ran cooking lessons.

Since taking part in 2023, Linda’s cooking has changed a lot in the ways she wants to present her food. She has learned “more refined and challenging dishes that taste and look better”.

Tigi loves to cook West African dishes he grew up with. “As I grew up and my eating experiences broadened, I also started to cook Caribbean, Indian and Italian style dishes,” he explained.
“Overall I really just like to experiment and try all different types of cuisine.”
Tigi took part on MasterChef in 2022 and reached the quarter finals.
