“Serenades the Women”: Mookie Betts Explains Why He Wants to ‘Beat Up’ Usher In Hilarious Mic’d Up Moment
Mookie Betts is one of the most fun-loving, genuine, and unfiltered baseball stars. He always keeps fans entertained on and off the diamond and, not to forget, is always full of surprises. Remember the time he went viral for telling the story about how scared he is of the ghost at the Los Angeles Dodgers team hotel on a podcast? Betts said he booked an Airbnb rather than mess with the ghosts. Recently, when he mic’d up during Sunday’s game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, Betts shared yet another story that’s going pretty viral — something no one saw coming!
In a truly Mookie Betts fashion, he playfully revealed threatening Usher. Yes, the R&B sensation himself! The minute Betts mentioned it, everyone was all ears. After all, it’s not every day you hear people warning one of the legends in the music world. Well, Betts was just having fun with Usher, saying if he ever caught Usher serenading with his wife, he would throw elbows.
Mookie Betts’ playful warning to Usher
Usher is one of the most influential names in the music world. He released his first music when he was just 15, and since then, he has recorded nine No.1 singles and sold over 100 million records. Usher became a global name and a sensation in the R&B world, but with his stardom, his reputation as being quite a ladies’ man is not a hushed secret. So, when Mookie Betts crossed paths with him, he couldn’t resist issuing a playful warning to keep his distance from his wife! “It was a good meeting,” Betts recalled, adding, “I told him I was able to go to his last show. He goes around and serenades the women. I’m like, ‘This is awesome.’ I’ve seen women melt.”

Then, the Los Angeles Dodgers star went ahead and give an ultimatum to Usher: “Then I told him. ‘Listen, Usher, I’ll mess with you the long way, the longest of long ways. But if you come over and serenade my wife, I’m throwing elbows at you.’ I told him that I’m diving in on him. Immediately.” Well, Mookie Betts may have said all that in fun, but he truly is deeply bonded to his wife Brianna Hammonds—considering they have known each other since childhood.
The couple began dating as teenagers, got married in 2021, and now, have two children. “Brianna has been by my side since we were teenagers,” Betts told PEOPLE after their engagement. While Betts is mostly easygoing, when it comes to his wife, even a star like Usher has to tread carefully!
Usher fights back with the Dodger’s star!
When Mookie Betts, in humor, warned Usher to steer clear of his wife Brianna, the reaction hearing this story from announcers and viewers was priceless — they were cackling up. And the reaction from Usher after hearing the threat was equally priceless; he didn’t aim to fight it off with elbows, rather, his words- well, what do you expect from a music sensation?
Usher told the Dodgers star with a confident smirk that he’d do what he wanted, playfully hinting that he might serenade Betts’ wife on the next tour. “No, he had the confidence to tell me, ‘Hey, I’m going back on tour, so there is another chance. I’m like, ‘Wait, Usher. No, no.’ But it is what it is. He got to do what he got to do,” Betts remarked with a smile.

As far as serenading goes, Usher had explained before, “It’s about a very classic R&B experience that is all about serenading and connecting with the audience.” Fans go crazy for him, be it his music or his physique, something the 45-year-old has mentioned he works very hard for. From cheers to the audience snatching his mic, Usher always keeps the crowd buzzing on his tours, which he is also currently on. But as for his personal life, Usher is happily married to his longtime love Jenn Goicoechea. “I feel good, I smell good, I look good, I make love good,” said Usher, being his charismatic self.
Seems like Mookie Betts acknowledged the R&B star’s persona – giving up his plea and letting Usher do his own thing. And Usher’s cheeky comeback just added more humor to this entire ordeal, turning Betts’ mic’d-up session out to be golden.
