Atmosphere at Ohio State has four-star WR Vernell Brown excited for his official visit
NASHVILLE – Ohio State is set to host a handful of talented prospects for official visits this weekend. One of them is Orlando (Fla.) Jones four-star wide receiver Vernell Brown III.
Brown, the No. 35 player in the On3 Industry Rankings, has visited Ohio State several times, but most of his family has yet to make the trip, so he is excited for the rest of his family to see Columbus for the first time.
“Just looking forward to getting up there, experiencing it again,” Brown told Lettermen Row at the 2024 On3 Elite Series this week. “I think the biggest thing — because I’ve seen it multiple times for myself, and with my dad even once — is just going up there with my family and seeing how they feel about it.”
Although Brown doesn’t need his family to fall in love with Ohio State, he just needs them to see that he is happy there.
“I mean, I wouldn’t even say they had to make them feel comfortable in Columbus. But they should feel comfortable with me being in Columbus.”
Brown is being recruited by Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline, and he is a big believer in Hartline’s ability to develop receivers and help them succeed in the NFL.
“I think when you just look at their resume and the proven development at the receiver position, the ultimate goal is obviously to play in the NFL, [be a] first-round draft pick and just to sustain in the NFL,” Brown said. “The guys that have been through Ohio State in the past and are there now, I mean the development is proven.”
But Hartline’s coaching chops aren’t the only reason why Brown is interested in the Buckeyes. He likes Ohio State’s offensive system as well as the program’s long line of talented cornerbacks, which he’d be able to compete against every day.
“I would say even bigger than Coach Hartline, just the Ohio State atmosphere — they’re a really good team,” Brown said, when explaining the appeal of the Buckeyes. “So you’re with the best of the best receivers, competing every day, getting better from one of the best coaches in Coach Hartline. Your offensive scheme is extremely receiver friendly. And you see that over the years with development, I keep going back to that.
“And then even the defense, you know, they have a really good defense. You’re going against top corners every day. That’s only gonna make you better. Because you don’t see a first-round DB every week, but you see one every day in practice [at Ohio State]. I think that’s definitely key.”
Brown is also starting to build a relationship with Ohio State quarterback commit Tavien St. Clair, and he had the opportunity to meet two future Buckeyes cornerbacks at the 2024 On3 Elite Series.
“Tavien is the guy I know the most,” Brown said. “[I have] a really good relationship with him. He’s a really good person. I definitely would love to catch from him in the future if it all works out.
“Devin Sanchez, kind of met him recently. So yeah, I mean, still getting to know him, getting to meet him, seems like a cool person. Na’eem Offord, just met him as well.”
Brown has a top four of Florida, Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and Ohio State. He is scheduled to take official visits to all four programs in June.
