Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram Continues to Break Franchise Records in Japan
Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram has become the first Detective Conan movie to attract over 10 million moviegoers in Japan, with the official X (Twitter) account revealing on June 3 JST a viewer count of 10.06 million.
The tweet also revealed that the film has made more than 14.4 billion yen (~US$91.65 million) since its premiere on April 12, making it the 16th highest-grossing movie in the country (and wedged right between the Makoto Shinkai films Suzume and Weathering With You). Last week, The Million-dollar Pentagram surpassed 2023’s Detective Conan: Black Iron Submarine, now the 19th highest-grossing movie at the Japanese box office, as the franchise’s most financially successful film in Japan.

The Million-dollar Pentagram is the 27th movie in the Detective Conan franchise, with a plot that involves Kaito Kid and Heiji Hattori. It opened in 515 theaters, and began English-subtitled screenings on May 24.
The Detective Conan manga by Gosho Aoyama, titled as Case Closed by Viz Media, began serialization in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday in 1994 and has 105 tankoubon volumes as of April 2024. The TV anime premiered in 1996, and the first anime film was released in 1997.
