Into The Blue: Michigan seeing top recruits on the road, flip targets, more
Michigan hits road
Michigan is back on the road for the final week of the spring evaluation period.
U-M quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell is in Florida today seeing On300 Michigan quarterback commit Carter Smith. The Fort Myers (Fla.) Bishop Verot product has been locked in with the Wolverines since committing in the fall and is set to make his official visit on June 21.
Campbell will then fly across the country to see Top 100 2026 Newbury Park (Calif.) High quarterback Brady Smigiel, who is set to make an unofficial visit next month. Campbell has plenty of options at quarterback next cycle, but it’s clear Smigiel is in his top tier.
Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford is also set to be out West this week and will check in on Top 100 Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei prospect Jordon Davison. Ohio State is considered the heavy favorite here, but Davison is making an OV to Michigan on June 7. We’ll see if the Wolverines can make something shake here.
Michigan tight ends coach Steve Casula is seeing one of the more intriguing offensive targets on the board in three-star Pocola (Okla.) High prospect Dakotah Terrell. While all eyes are on Andrew Olesh, Terrell has an impressive frame at 6-foot-9, 210 pounds and is a recruit that Casula seems to personally like.
Michigan secondary coach LaMar Morgan is in Indiana seeing On300 Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern cornerback Mason Alexander. The Wolverines have not offered, but if Morgan does decide to jump in the mix, I would expect U-M to be a major player and receive an OV.
Morgan will then head to the DMV, where he will see Top 100 Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga safety Kainoa Winston. Michigan is set to receive an official visit on May 31, and the Wolverines have continued to build positive momentum here.
Flip targets
While on the East Coast, Morgan will see Top 100 Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale cornerback Shamari Earls, who is committed to South Carolina. That visit is slated to happen tomorrow, and it will be interesting to see what comes of it.
Earls was one of the first recruits that Morgan reached out to when he was hired and remains high on the board. I exchanged a few messages with Earls yesterday, and he told me that he is excited to meet with Morgan, who will also watch him go through drills.
Morgan spent some time in Florida last week and saw Top 100 Notre Dame safety commit Ivan Taylor, who sided with the Irish in December.
Michigan would love to get him on campus, but ND does have a no-visit policy. Right now, there isn’t much to report here, but Taylor is definitely on the board.
Obviously, Top 100 Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances cornerback Blake Woodby just backed out of his pledge to Ohio State. As I mentioned yesterday, Auburn, Georgia and Oregon are some of the schools at the top. However, Michigan is a real option here.
Morgan and Woodby plan to talk more this week. While Woodby is on the smaller side, he has elite speed, and Michigan is intrigued by his ability to play corner or nickel. This actually won’t be Morgan and Woodby’s first conversation. The two spoke while Woodby was still committed to OSU — an interesting little nugget.
RB recruiting
On300 Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard running back Iverson Howard is slated to make his decision this week, but as I posted on the board, I don’t expect U-M to be the pick.
Simply put, Michigan has others higher on the board.
The aforementioned Davison is set to come in on June 7, three-star New Orleans (La.) Archbishop Shaw prospect Jasper Parker is set to come in on June 14 and three-star Valdosta (Ga.) High prospect Todd Robinson is set to come in on June 21.
As I mentioned last week, Michigan is very high on On300 Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy running back Donovan Johnson. The hope is to get him in for an unofficial visit next month and bring him back for an official visit in the fall.
Three-star Chattanooga (Tenn.) Baylor School running back Shekai Mills-Knight is another prospect the Wolverines want to get to campus for an OV.
