Cubs vs. Giants prediction, odds, pick – 6/24/2024
It’s time to continue our MLB odds series with a Cubs-Giants prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Cubs Giants.
The 2024 National League is interesting, but not for the best of reasons. There are nine tightly-bunched teams vying for two wild card playoff spots in the Senior Circuit. It will make the second half of the season dramatic, but only because there is so much mediocre baseball being played by the vast majority of National League ballclubs. The Cubs and Giants join the Cardinals, Padres, Mets, Diamondbacks, Pirates, Reds, and Nationals as teams with a realistic shot at October, but with records that are all hovering near the .500 mark. Last year, the Marlins and Diamondbacks both made the playoffs without winning as many as 86 regular-season games. This year, we could see an 82- or 81-win playoff team. It’s an opportunity for these clubs, who have not been punished for being mediocre, but it remains that these teams are in fact average, and will probably need to be slightly better than average if they actually want to claim a playoff berth. At least one of these teams will probably separate a little from the pack at some point. The Cubs and Giants have a chance to establish themselves as that team this week in what is a very significant series. Any series matching any two of these nine National League playoff hopefuls carries a little extra weight, especially with the trade deadline not that far away.
Cubs-Giants Projected Starters
Justin Steele vs. TBD
Justin Steele (0-3) has a 3.16 ERA. Justin Steele shows why “kill the win” — analyst Brian Kenny’s longstanding mantra on MLB Network — is popular and well-received. Steele pitches really well, but he has lost all three decisions. He deserves so much better than what he gets, and he shows why the Cubs’ offense is such a complete disappointment. Steele simply isn’t getting any run support despite doing his job well. He handcuffed the Giants last week, so that should give him confidence that he can take the bump in Oracle Park and once again limit a San Francisco batting order which has very few bright spots this season.
Last Start: Tuesday, June 18 versus the San Francisco Giants: 6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 HR, 2 BB, 8 K
2024 Road Splits: 5 starts, 28 2/3 IP, 20 H, 10 R, 3 HR, 6 BB, 29 K
The Giants had not announced a starter as of early Monday morning. They might go with a bullpen-by-committee approach in this game. This is why run-line prices and over-under totals and prices had not been listed roughly 12 hours before the first pitch in San Francisco.

Why The Cubs Could Cover The Spread
The appeal of Justin Steele is obvious. He pitched well versus the Giants last week. San Francisco has lost five games in a row and is performing poorly. The Cubs getting a run and a half looks very tempting here.
Why The Giants Could Cover The Spread
The Giants got a look at Justin Steele last week. Having lost five in a row, they are due to play a much better game and finally generate some offense.
Final Cubs-Giants Prediction & Pick
These are two mediocre teams with subpar offenses. Stay away from this game. It’s just not a game with a clear-cut angle.
Final Cubs-Giants Prediction & Pick: Cubs +1.5
