Woman Coughs Up Blood After 4-Time Domestic Abuser Chases Her With Butcher Knife: Cops

BRAIDWOOD, IL — A 49-year-old man with four prior domestic battery convictions must stay in the Will County Jail for an indefinite period of time now that Braidwood police arrested James Kawell in connection with his latest domestic violence case, this time in their small community south of Joliet. Will County prosecutors charged Kawell with six domestic battery crimes, one unlawful restraint and one aggravated assault. Will County Judge Brian Barrett agreed that Kawell, who comes from Brookfield, will be kept in Will County's Jail under the SAFE-T-Act, after hearing evidence outlined by the Will County State's Attorney's Office regarding the overnight incident from July 19.Braidwood police were called out to Dogwood Lane at 2:30 a.m. for a scuffle involving a woman and a man. The 911 caller said that a man had assaulted her daughter and drove off. At the scene, the victim requested medical attention, she was distraught, crying and clutching the left side of her face. She told Braidwood police that Kawell assaulted her.The 48-year-old woman explained that around 5 p.m., she got into an argument with Kawell and he grabbed her face with both hands and shoved her to the bathroom floor, the court records note.Kawell then punched her in the left side of her face with his left fist as she remained on her back, and although she pleaded for the beating to stop, Kawell began to choke her with both hands for 15 seconds, the prosecutors outlined. The victim did not lose consciousness, but her vision began to darken, the police learned. Upon releasing his grip, Kawell punched her again, in the left ribs as she was spitting blood on the floor, the court files show. The victim escaped by running to another Braidwood house, on Cedar Lane. When the victim returned to Dogwood Lane, around 1:30 a.m., to retrieve her belongings, Kawell and his male roommate were inside. Another argument ensued and this time Kawell blocked her exit through the sliding door and he followed her to the kitchen, court records reflect. This time, the woman grabbed a screwdriver and Kawell grabbed a knife, and he chased her into the bathroom where he threw her to the ground on her back, the prosecutors advised. Kawell straddled her as he held the knife against her throat and choked her with his right hand while making threats, the court files show. The woman notified Kawell's roommate to call police as she rolled over and spit out blood into a rag. The roommate told Braidwood police that Kawell obtained the knife from the butcher block, and he saw Kawell grab the victim and throw her to the ground with her head landing in the bathroom and her feet in the hall. When the roommate told Kawell to stop, Kawell handed over the knife and left the house, the court documents indicate. Will County prosecutors revealed that Kawell has four prior domestic battery convictions: one in 1998 from Lake County, a second in Lake County from 1999, a third, an aggravated domestic battery from Lake County in 2003 and a fourth domestic battery from Cook County in 2022.Kawell also received a 20-year prison term out of Cook County for a 2010 home invasion. His 2003 Lake County case was reduced under a plea bargain after he was originally charged with attempted murder. The article Woman Coughs Up Blood After 4-Time Domestic Abuser Chases Her With Butcher Knife: Cops appeared first on Joliet, IL Patch.
