Devin Vassell untouchable in San Antonio?

According to ESPN NBA Draft analyst Jonathan Givony, the Spurs are in “win-now” mode and are willing to do anything—except trade Wembanyama and Devin Vassell—to make that happen. “Everything I hear is that they want to be competitive next year, they want to be in the playoffs. They’re not looking to make this a 2-3 year process, where they’re in the lottery again next year. For right now, they want to be competitive next year and that’s why I think they’re going to be aggressive with those picks,” Givony said on The Ringer’s NBA Draft Show. “I’ve heard nobody in the roster is untouchable except Victor [Wembanyama] and Devin Vassell.”Source: BasketNews

Will Guillory: With his size, 3-point shooting, and athleticism, I think he can definitely get a big number. I think you want to be smart about what that means for the rest of the roster. I definitely don’t think he’s a max guy or anything like that, but over the $100 million mark, I think there is no question. Michael Scotto: I don’t think he takes an extension for $20 million a year. If this is going to be a real conversation, you’re Murphy, and you’re betting on yourself, and you think you’re going to have a breakout year, you’re signing an extension beforehand, and it’s got to be in the middle where it’s a number where he’ll grow into that production. I don’t see it being a conversation unless it’s at least four years, $100 million. Look at the extensions Jaden McDaniels and Devin Vassell signed. You’ve got to look at those as starting points. If you don’t do an extension and Murphy really breaks out, then it could be even more than that. -via HoopsHype / May 10, 2024

The adjustment was evident from the first day of training camp, growing pains and all. “I think there were a lot of times where we either got turnovers or we just weren’t able to get on the ball at certain spots,” Vassell said. “You’re used to throwing it up to somebody, but not that high. There are certain things that you just got to get accustomed to and used to.” -via San Antonio Express-News / April 16, 2024
