Jeff Stelling and Sky Bet EFL grant helps fund community football centre in Chris Kamara’s childhood borough

JEFF STELLING has delivered an unbelievable surprise for his long-time friend Chris Kamara – a new community football centre in the heart of ‘Kammy’s home borough.
Middlesbrough has been awarded £100,000 from the Sky Bet EFL Building Foundations Fund, one of nine successful applications sharing a total of £520,000 in funding.

The initiative aims to boost grassroots football participation for over-18s, tackle social isolation, and enhance community engagement.
The funding will enable Middlesbrough Borough Council, in partnership with the Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation, to advance plans for the new Southlands Centre in Park End.
The area holds special significance for Kamara, who grew up there in the 1970s.
Jeff Stelling, one of five judges on the Building Foundations Fund panel, was unaware of the personal connection when reviewing the bid.
He said: “Middlesbrough Football Club Foundation had such an impressive bid. This new centre with 3G and grass football pitches will go into the heart of one of the most deprived parts of England.
“The money from Sky Bet and the EFL means the council can go ahead with the investment and bring football back to the community.
“God help us, but maybe it will find another Kammy!”
Chris Kamara, famous for his catchphrase ‘It’s Unbelievable Jeff’ from his time on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, welcomed the news, noting the significant impact it would have on aspiring footballers in the area.

He said: “I spent my childhood kicking a football around the streets of Park End. Having access to this kind of facility will be transformational for aspiring footballers living in Middlesbrough… and hopefully the EFL one day.”
Alongside Middlesbrough, eight other bids will share £420,000.
Norwich City FC Community Foundation has secured £90,000 for a scheme aimed at reducing isolation and fostering community connections.
The project will train volunteers of all ages, including those from underrepresented groups, while supporting other Foundation initiatives.
Wigan Athletic Community Trust will receive £30,000 to support its Adult Disability Football Programme, which provides weekly football sessions for adults with disabilities.
The initiative aims to improve physical health, mental well-being, and social inclusion through accessible football opportunities.
Last year, Accrington Stanley received the first £100,000 grant, using it to fund a new community 3G pitch at their Stanley Sports Hub development, benefiting local residents and enhancing sports provision in their area.
