He then remembered the What3Words app he downloaded after Evans recommended it on his radio show.
It encodes any location into three words, which Chris read to the call handler.
Rescuers then arrived to pull him out of his Tesla at the country lane in Seaton, Devon, where the food safety systems director was on a business trip last week.
Chris went to hospital with suspected hypothermia before getting the all clear.
The dad of three, of Chesham, Bucks, said: “I’m so thankful to Chris Evans. He undoubtedly saved my life.”
He told how he was hit by a downpour which flooded the road and caused his car to sink.
Chris recalled: “As soon as the water started to come into the cabin of the car, I called 999.
“By this point I was really panicking as it was rising rapidly. It was up to the dashboard and above my chest. I was terrified.”
But he had heard Evans urge Virgin Radio listeners to use the app after a boy of three died at his CarFest event in Hants in August.
“Evans yesterday praised the boy’s family for telling him about What3Words, adding of Chris: “That’s why we bang on about it.”
