Macaulay Culkin Describes Father's Day as a 'Celebration of My Boys' Despite 'Complicated Relationship' with Holiday

Macaulay Culkin has decided to "reinvent the wheel" with his approach to Father's Day.On Wednesday, June 5, the actor and father of two — who shares his boys with Brenda Song — uploaded a candid post to Instagram, describing his "complicated" feelings toward the holiday and how he's making an effort to treat his boys each year.The Home Alone star, 43, and Song, 36, are parents to Dakota Song Culkin, 3, and another son whose name has not been confirmed.

"If you know a little about me then you’d know I’ve had a complicated relationship with Father’s Day in the past," Culkin wrote. "But since becoming a papa myself I’ve decided to reinvent the wheel. Other than getting an hour or two of extra sleep I try to make the day a celebration of my boys more than me.""After all, they are the ones who made me a father (no offense to Brenda)," he continued. "In our house Father’s Day isn’t held in as a high regard as birthdays or Christmas but it does mop the floor of such holidays as St. Patrick’s day, Valentine’s Day, and the 4th of July. Play now!After calling Father's Day a "special day" for the Culkin household, the actor revealed Lucasfilm sent him a "care package full of things that are more meant for my children to enjoy" including some sweet holiday notes and a plush Darth Vader."Father’s Day isn’t for me, it’s for the people that make me feel like a father," Culkin added.

Both of Culkin's parents, Christopher Cornelius "Kit" Culkin and Patricia Brentrup, managed his career as a child star.Culkin has previously accused his father of being "physically and mentally ” abusive and resentful toward his success in Hollywood during a conversation on WTF With Marc Maron in 2018. The actor also previously shared that his dad kept him in the dark about his finances during his early years. Culkin eventually removed his parents from his trust fund.After Kit and Brentrup separated and following a custody battle that began in the summer of 1995, Macauley shared in a 2001 New York Magazine interview that hadn't seen his father since 1997.
