First round recap: What 5A, 6A basketball teams are still fighting?

The first round has come and gone for boys and girls basketball teams in 5A and 6A. That means the playing pool has now cut in half, with many teams already sent home as their playoff aspirations disappeared before they were fully formed. Still, many teams remain fighting and enjoy a Sweet 16 berth to look forward to this week. As a reminder, first-round, second-round and Sweet 16 games will be hosted at the higher seed. The Great 8, Final 4, and championship games will be hosted at the Denver Coliseum. This list is only for Colorado Community Media coverage-area teams. Here is everything you missed from the past weekend. Let’s start with the boys, who are back in action on Tuesday, March 4. Boys basketball – 6A Here are the upcoming Sweet 16 local matchups, including results from the first round. All games tip off on March 4. No. 9 Regis Jesuit (Aurora) will host No. 25 Grandview at 6 p.m. Regis beat No. 24 Monarch 74-62 to advance. Grandview upset No. 8 Horizon 59-54 to stay alive. No. 4 Ralston Valley (Arvada) will host No. 13 Denver South (Denver) at 6:30 p.m.The Mustangs took care of No. 36 Cherry Creek 75-43. Denver South beat No. 20 Fossil Ridge 83-60. Overland had a big upset over No. 11 Broomfield 74-53 to stay alive. Rock Canyon upset No. 14 Smoky Hill 81-67 to advance. No. 2 Eaglecrest (Centennial) will host No. 15 Arvada West at 7 p.m. Eaglecrest squeaked by No. 34 Rocky Mountain 61-53 to advance. A-West handled No. 18 Northfield 67-38. No. 5 Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch) will host No. 12 Arapahoe (Centennial) at 7 p.m. The Eagles beat No. 28 Denver East 64-45 to advance to the Sweet 16. Arapahoe outlasted No. 21 Doherty 73-64. No. 7 Thunderridge (Highlands Ranch) will host No. 10 Fruita Monument (Fruita) at 7 p.m. Thunderridge handled No. 39 Vista PEAK Prep 59-43.
