Chicago Cubs legend and Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg dead at 65 after prostate cancer battle as MLB stars pay tribute
CHICAGO Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg has died at the age of 65.
The former second baseman died after a battle with prostate cancer.

He died with his wife Margaret by his side, and was surrounded by his children.
“We thank you for all of the kind words, support, and love during this difficult time. Ryne will forever be in our hearts,” they said in a statement.
“Ryne will forever be in our hearts.”
Sandberg was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in January 2024.
In August, he said he was cancer-free before announcing in December, the cancer had returned and spread.
Just two weeks ago, he provided fans with an update on his health.
“I wanted to share an update regarding my health,” a statement shared on his social media said.
“It’s been a challenging few months as I have been regularly going through treatment on a regular basis.
“While I am continuing to fight, I’m looking forward to making the most of every day, with my loving family and friends.”
In the statement, he expressed regret that he hadn’t been able to visit Wrigley Field as much as he wanted.
Sandberg starred for the Cubs between 1982 and 1994, and 1996 and 1997.
He made the move to the Chicago team following a stint at the Philadelphia Phillies.
During his playing career, he was a 10 time All Star and a nine-time recipient of the Gold Glove.
And, he picked up the prestigious Silver Slugger Award nine times between 1984 and 1992.
He is a member of the Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame and his 23 jersey was retired as a tribute.
Sandberg was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.

RYNE Sandberg's family has announced the death of the baseball legend and Hall of Famer. In a statement, they said:
“To Ryne’s Fans, Friends, and Baseball Family – It is with heavy hearts, we announce that Ryne passed away tonight in the comfort of his home.
“Ryne was surrounded by his loving wife Margaret, their children, and grandchildren.
“We thank you for all of the kind words, support, and love during this difficult time. Ryne will forever be in our hearts.”

Sandberg later served as the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies between 2013 and 2015.
In June 2024, a statue of Sandberg was unveiled outside Wrigley Field.
It came 40 years after the so-called Ryne Sandberg game, where he scored two homers.
Tributes have poured in across the world of baseball.
Tom Ricketts, the executive chair of the Cubs, described Sandberg as a “hero.”
The MLB said it has been left “deeply saddened” by Sandberg’s death.
“Sandberg bravely battled cancer the last two years,” the organization posted on X.
Cubs fans said Sandberg was their idol during their childhood.
“He was my idol growing up. They say never meet your idol because you will be disappointed,” one fan said.
“This could not be farther from the truth with Ryno.
“He was such a kind human being who loved talking to people.”
What are the symptoms every man needs to know?
In most cases, prostate cancer doesn’t have any symptoms until the growth is big enough to put pressure on the urethra – that tube you pee through.
Symptoms include:
Needing to urinate more often, especially at night
Needing to rush to the toilet
Difficulty in starting to pee
Weak flow
Straining and taking a long time while peeing
Feeling that your bladder hasn’t emptied fully
Many men’s prostates get larger as they age because of the non-cancerous conditions, prostate enlargement, and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
In fact, these two conditions are more common than prostate cancer – but that doesn’t mean the symptoms should be ignored.
The signs that cancer has SPREAD include bone, back, or testicular pain, loss of appetite, and unexplained weight loss.
