The 5 cheapest new cars Brits can buy including bizarre EV that teens can drive and legendary Top Gear model
THE cheapest new cars Brits can buy have been revealed, including an EV with a 189-mile range and a “remarkably spacious” Hyundai.
It’s possible to pick up a motor fresh off the production line for under £8,000 – but there’s a catch.

Experts from online sales platform Buy A Car compiled a league table of the most affordable options on the market.
David Ross, who collected the data, said: “While new car prices have risen… there are still models around if you’re on a budget.
“True, new car list prices may not be as relevant today as they once were, with so many buyers electing to purchase through finance.
“But even if you’re buying on a PCP for instance, the list price still affects what you end up paying.”
1. Citroen Ami

Base price: £7,695
In the interest of full transparency, this one is a little bit cheeky in that the Ami is no technically a car.
The ultra-cheap EV does look like a car and it has two seats, wheels, a roof, a dashboard and all the things you might associate with one.
But one of the reasons it’s so cheap is that it’s legally classified as a quadricycle.
This means it can be driven on a moped licence, which you can get from age 16, and also that it doesn’t have to conform to all the same rules as larger vehicles.
It’s ideal for city driving but, with a 46-mile range and top speed of 28mph, it’s not the most versatile thing on the road.
2. Dacia Sandero

Base price: £13,795
The Sandero shot to prominence as a running gag on the new segment on Top Gear, where James May would associate the car with “good news”.
It actually claimed the crown as the nation’s cheapest car in 2013 and has been strongly in the running in the years since.
And while it is the runner-up by a hefty £6,000, it does offer a fair bit more than the Ami – things like the ability to drive for more than a few hours, four seats and some speed.
Add to that the infotainment screen, Bluetooth connectivity and far more spacious interior, it’s worthy of the title of most affordable car (if only by the legal definition).
Plus, the larger Stepway version also cracked the top 10 for 2024 at just £15,285.
3. Citroen C3

Base price: £14,150
Citroen has long been locked in a race to the bottom with its rivals on price and has been sniffing around the top spot for some years.
To this end, the C3 provides excellent comfort and adaptability for everyday use.
David said: “Another Citroen makes the ten cheapest cars you can buy in the UK, and it’s one of the cheapest small cars you can buy from a mainstream manufacturer.
“The C3 is a grown-up small car with a small price tag too.”
4. MG3

Base price: £14,355
The expert’s pick for “driving fun”, the MG3 has a bit of a sportier edge than the other entries on the list.
Topping 105mph, it could be considered a genuine hot hatch, if a slightly underpowered one.
The Chinese-owned brand has produced a hybrid version too, but the really wallet-friendly one is the petrol variant.
5. Fiat Panda

Base price: £14,750
David said: “The Fiat Panda is no spring chicken, having first been introduced in 2011, but regular updates have helped keep it fresh.
“Aside from price, arguably the Fiat Panda’s biggest draw is its funky design.
“Inside and out, the Panda is quirky and modern.”
Not only that, but the Panda offers a bit more space and many of the same features as its much more popular cousin, the 500, for around £1,000 less.
