Shoppers have hailed these bird ornaments as Target’s hottest must-have Pride items

Among Target’s reduced Pride merchandise this year are two bird ornaments that have become hot collector’s items because of their resemblance to gay film icons.
The two birds are listed on the retailer’s website as Movie Star Featherly Bird Friend and Beach Poolside Featherly Bird Friend. The website says the movie star bird was styled after actress Tipi Hedren’s outfit in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror film The Birds, and social media commenters have said that the beach poolside bird roughly resembles an outfit worn by gay actor Nathan Lane in the 1996 gay comedy The Birdcage. Each sells for $5 and, according to commenters, they’re regularly selling out at local Target stores.

If the recent anti-LGBTQ+ backlash wasn’t so disturbing, it would almost be… funny.
“This morning, I woke up to a [direct message that] the sold-out Target pride bird was back in stock, and so I made it my life’s mission today to go find this bird,” Instagram user Connor Clary said in a June 4 video. “I bought it as a pickup order because I was like, I am not trying to brawl it out with some suburban moms over the last bird in the Target Pride section. I had no idea these were so popular. It’s like, cutthroat out here, but I got the bird. It’s literally even cuter in person.”

Clary said that he has no idea bird what the bird has to do with Pride and that it came with a small metallic car whose wheels don’t move, something he jokingly said was “homophobic.”
“She also doesn’t really fit that well in the car. Like, don’t tell her this, but she’s a little bit too big,” Clary added. “Whatever, she’s serving. I’m obsessed with her. I’m gonna go get married to her.”

This isn’t the first time that Target shoppers have become obsessed with its Pride-themed merchandise. In recent years, the retailer sold an LGBTQ+-themed holiday nutcracker that also sold out, making it a hard-to-find favorite.
