Virginia Beach golfer Evan Beck shares medalist honor, wins first round at U.S. Mid-Amateur near Richmond

GOLF
Evan Beck of Virginia Beach couldn’t have started much hotter in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which is being played in the Richmond area, about two hours from his home.
Among 264 starters Saturday and Sunday, Beck, 34, shared the medal with an 8-under-par 133, shooting 68 at Independence Golf Club and then at 65 at Kinloch Golf Club. He was the runner-up in this event last year.
The former Norfolk Academy and Wake Forest golfer tied Argentina’s Segundo Oliva Pinto, the 2019 CAA individual champion for UNC Wilmington and the 2021 Southeastern Conference individual champion with Arkansas. Pinto is 25, the minimum age to compete in the event.
Virginia Beach’s Brinson Paolini (72-74-146) and Chesapeake’s Adam Horton (74-76-150) also were in the field but failed to make the 64-man cut for match play, all of which is at Kinloch. Fifty-two players at even-par or better did so, as well as 12 players at 1 over who advanced in a 14-man playoff.
Beck’s excellence continued in match play’s first round. He defeated reinstated amateur Cody Paladino of West Hartford, Connecticut, 5 and 3, shooting 4 under without a bogey in 15 holes to down a man who was a first-team All-American for Baylor in 2004 and ’05. Beck won holes 3, 4 and 5 to take control, then won 14 and 15 to clinch.
Beck will face former East Carolina golfer Jackson Spires of Apex, North Carolina, at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday in the round of 32.
