Haynes Talks Latest State Titles and Sooners Relationship
MIDWEST CITY, Okla. – Few high school athletes in the Sooner state can lay claim to more hardware than Carl Albert cornerback Trystan Haynes. Following back-to-back state titles in football he took home a team track state title as well as an individual 400-meter state championship for the Titans. But with his recent Sooners commitment he’s starting to turn his focus to one more state title in football as well as his future in Norman.
“It’s been a lot more, just me being able to focus on football with spring practice coming around. Being able to focus on building my relationship with coach (Jay) Valai. It’s just been a lot calmer,” Haynes told SCOOPHD.
That relationship with Valai was key in his decision to pick Oklahoma. He talked about the bond that they’ve built and described the third-year Sooners assistant for those who haven’t come to know him as well as Haynes has.
“He’s just real genuine, he’s a funny guy. He talks to everybody. For people to think he’s quiet, for me that’s crazy but I see him a lot. He’s real talkative; just the life of the room,” he said.
But beyond that Valai has a reputation as a developer and has shown signs of it with Oklahoma’s cornerback room growing in talent and depth since his arrival. Haynes says his ability with the technical side of the game was a big draw for Oklahoma.
“It’s been a lot, I went to the camp last year and he was helping me through the technical parts of it. Whenever he was at the state game last year, he was talking to me about a couple things I could fix,” he said. “When he was down here a few days ago he was talking about a few things I could fix. He’s just really knowledgeable about it and I like that, he’s just so technical and I feel like that’s the part I can fine tune the most. He’s a great tool for me.”
Haynes Had Season-Long Battle on the Track
The new Sooners pledge, as mentioned, just got done helping the Titans to it’s first team title since 2018. Not only did he win the individual 400 but also helped the Titans win gold in the 4×400 and 4×100 relays.
But his season-long battle with Classen SAS star, and Tulsa signee, Elijah Green culminated in an great final race between the two.
“It was a tight trace, he came down to the Carl Albert meet a few weeks before and he beat me. I knew what I was going to have to do and push it. We were neck and neck the whole year. Coming down the last stretch we were neck and neck and I had to find another gear to pull through.”
