Over 700 Maui Wildfire Survivors Attend Event to Enroll in Disaster Recovery Program

The Hawai'i Department of Human Services recently facilitated an essential event for individuals affected by the Maui wildfires, aiding them in understanding and enrolling in the Disaster Case Management Program. The gathering, held in Kahului, brought together community partners and over 700 attendees, many of whom are still grappling with the aftermath of the disaster. Interested survivors were given the opportunity to directly enroll in the supportive program, according to Hawai'i Governor's Office.
Staffed by disaster case managers who operate as the so-called 'quarterbacks' of recovery, the program is designed to assess and directly address the varied needs of survivors through comprehensive disaster recovery plans. These plans include resources, decision-making priorities, and provide guidance and tools. The disaster case managers, having recently received an additional $7.9 million, has seen its funding balloon to a total of $26.8 million. This expansion will allow the program to eventually to serve up to 3,000 households concurrently—an appreciable leap from its current capacity, as per the Hawai'i Governor's Office.
According to an outreach event report published by the Hawai'i Governor's Office, more than 100 affected individuals were immediately enrolled with the help of disaster case managers at the University of Hawai'i Maui College location. To date, the program has already positively impacted over 5,000 individuals within the Maui community.
Disaster Case Management Program Director Jen Monaghan has expressed her gratitude towards the Maui community and other partners for their continued support. "Thank you to the Maui community and all of our great partners. We are so grateful to everyone that has helped to make the Disaster Case Management Program a success and look forward to continuing to help connect survivors with the crucial services they need," Monaghan said. She also emphasized the active efforts to expand the program further, urging survivors to actively to reach out either through outreach events or by calling a dedicated helpline, as reported by the Hawai'i Governor's Office.
Maui wildfire survivors seeking assistance through the Disaster Case Management Program are encouraged to call 211. The helpline operates from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily to serve those in need. In bridging the gap between calamity and recovery, the initiative is a beacon for those still navigating the precarious path towards normalcy in the face of disaster.
