The black vs. white SUV mom trend is viral on TikTok, but here's why it's not one or the other.

Fact checked by Sarah ScottFact checked by Sarah ScottBy now, you may be aware of the white SUV mom vs. black SUV mom debate. At the outset, you should know I drive a black SUV—but I don’t necessarily identify with the black SUV mom characteristics being portrayed online.ICYMI, the trend began on TikTok, with creators like Paige Craig sharing videos explaining the difference between moms who drive these two different color cars.Basically, a white SUV mom has it together. Her hair is “just so,” her makeup is on point, and her outfit is clean, coordinated, and well thought out. She’s toting a Stanley, or Starbucks cup naturally, and her latest haul from Target is arranged neatly in the back. If her kids are in the car with her, the white SUV mom’s tone in dealing with them is calm and patient. This mom is also obviously listening to Taylor Swift. @_paigecraig Can you tell the difference? 😂 the black vs white suv thing is actually pretty funny even tho im kinda a mix of both. #momof3 #momsoftiktok #millenialmom #momcar ♬ original sound - Paige Craig Then there’s the black SUV mom. She’s frazzled, overstimulated, and so over, well, everything. Her hair is a mess, and her outfit isn’t as planned out as her white SUV mom counterpart. Her beverage of choice? An energy drink. And the soundtrack of her chaos, punctuated by a slew of messy shopping bags (some from Walmart), is either rap or loud rock. As far as her parenting style, it can be summarized in one word: exasperation. If the white SUV mom is aspirational, the black SUV mom is reality. The white SUV mom is us on our best days, and the black SUV mom is when we’re at our wit’s end. At least, this is the basic takeaway from many commenters who flooded Craig’s TikTok, and another, created by Indiana car dealership Peru Ford, which also delineates the differences between black and white SUV moms.Indeed, the many moms who see themselves in both of these representations have deemed themselves the gray SUV moms. “I’m both,” one such mama said. “It depends on the day.” Someone else admitted, “I’m definitely both of these people on any given day. Flip a coin.”“I’m a gray SUV mom,” another commenter confirmed, while plenty of others confessed they identify more with the black SUV mom, although they drive a white one. It seems that ultimately, this debate brought out a bit of modesty in us all. Because while we’d probably like to be white SUV moms every day, the reality is that we all have black SUV days. Overall, the vibe is gray—somewhere in between having time to shower and curl your eyelashes, and scraping Goldfish crumbs off the floorboards of your vehicle while raging a bit inside.Perhaps TikTok creator Mrs. K Hagler has the best, albeit very privileged, approach. She shared how she has both a black and a white SUV, so she can choose what she feels like driving based on her mood. That makes it easy! @mrs.khagler I can really never be put in a box. Lol Im a white suv mom and a black suv mom. #blacksuvmomsvswhitesuvmoms #whitesuvmom #blacksuvmom #leisurelife #keptwifelife ♬ Wild Thing (Re-Recorded) - Tone-Loc For more Parents news, make sure to sign up for our newsletter!
