Is Megabus Really Going Out of Business? Debunking the Rumors
Earlier this week, reports circulated online about Megabus‘ city-to-city bus service going out of business. These claims came about shortly after Megabus announced that it was concluding its services in Texas cities such as Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, as well as Atlanta, Charlotte, Durham, Richmond, and Washington D.C. Additionally, Megabus VP of Commercial Colin Emberson confirmed the change, stating that the bus service will still operate in other cities.
“Unfortunately, Megabus had to make the difficult business decision to discontinue our service to/from Texas,” Emberson said. “We are still offering trips to more than 500 cities in North America and we’re always looking for opportunities to provide new routes in the future.”
The change follows a bankruptcy filed by Coach USA, the parent company of Megabus, in a District of Delaware U.S. Bankruptcy Court last June. Prior to the bankruptcy, Megabus had operated 2,250 vehicles, and employed over 2,700 employees across 500 U.S. cities.
However, days after the news was released about the changes, an X (formerly known as Twitter) user made a tweet questioning the existence of the bus service.
Uh??? @megabus so you’re just non existent?!?! Y’all were the ONLY bus I took smh. So now my options definitely are driving, Amtrak, or flying.

“Uh??? @megabus so you’re just non existent?!?! Y’all were the ONLY bus I took smh. So now my options definitely are driving, Amtrak, or flying,” the user wrote.
The tweet quickly went viral with many others reacting to the news. One user chimed in writing, “ii use to love megabus. double decker. wifi. outlets. cheap. never an issue. we can’t have nothing nice,” while another added, “RIP megabus. we had some good times girl.”
After a while, Megabus caught wind of the news and quickly debunked the rumors, revealing, “We are not going out of business.” To help clarify the miscommunications, the bus service also shared a link to its website listing its new changes.
Currently, the changes include routes in New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia being operated by Peter Pan Bus Line. While Fullington Trailways now operate Harrisburg, King of Prussia, and Pittsburgh following its expansion partnership.
