Ranking the remaining recruiting needs
South Carolina football is about to enter a pivotal summer as camps and official visits are beginning next weekend.
There are plenty of needs for Shane Beamer’s coaching staff to solve through the high school, junior college, and transfer portal ranks for the 2025 cycle.
Here is how the current class breaks down in terms of committed prospects per position:
DB: Two (Damarcus Leach, Shamari Earls)DT: One (Caleb Williams)EDGE: One (Anthony Addison)WR: Two (Brian Rowe, Jayden Sellers)
Which positions are the most important in this class? We take a look here, exclusively for GamecockCentral.com members.
1. Defensive Tackle
From a numbers and impact standpoint, we cannot think of a greater position of need than the interior defensive line. South Carolina is extremely upperclassmen-heavy at this spot. That’s great for this season, but could present a challenge next year.
There are four seniors/graduates, plus a redshirt junior in TJ Sanders who could be in a position to jump to the NFL after the 2024 campaign. In addition to those, nobody else on the roster is a freshman or redshirt freshman.
That means that Travian Robertson will be looking to add both some young talent (like the committed Caleb Williams) with some impact players from JUCO (like target Zavion Hardy) and the portal.
2. Offensive Line
The Gamecocks have been recruiting well on the offensive line, but Shane Beamer rightfully pointed out that South Carolina’s a bit low on overall numbers on the position.
Programs typically want to recruit several each cycle and hope to hit on more than they miss on. There are several targets making official visits this summer to Columbia.
This is another position in which USC will lose several seniors after the 2024 campaign, and it’s been a priority to turn this spot around through recruiting. If USC could stack some volume and talent in the ’25 class to add to what it did in 2023 and 2024, one could see it start to come together.
3. WR
South Carolina was very active in the portal this offseason, bringing in a total of five transfer wideouts. A couple of those will be finished after this season, and others have remaining eligibility. The Gamecocks have done well to add some players that can help, but there were some misses over the last few cycles that have USC in a position to where this spot is still a significant need.

4. LB
This is one of the deepest positions on the roster for 2024, but it’s also laden with upperclassman experience. That means the Gamecocks are going to need to bring along some younger talent and perhaps grab some immediate impact players from the portal. There are four seniors at this spot.
5. EDGE
You have to be able to rush the passer to win in the SEC. The Gamecocks have a potential stud freshman in Dylan Stewart and acquired a couple of impact players from the portal this offseason. There’s a need to stack more young talent – Sterling Lucas is after some big ones – and the staff could also monitor the portal here.
6. RB
South Carolina took three transfer backs this offseason, illustrating just how much of a need it was heading into this offseason.
Here’s to thinking things won’t be as extreme this time around, as there’s some volume to this position now and a mix of younger and experienced players. USC will still look to take a high school back, at least, in this class.
7. DB
There are some younger players being developed at defensive back, particularly at corner. The portal is always an area South Carolina could tap into for additional help. Like all spots, you need talent here. It’s just not as high-ranking this cycle as perhaps some others.
8. QB
While the Gamecocks did pursue a high school quarterback in 2025 – Ryan Montgomery committed to Georgia – this position is lower on the totem pole in terms of overall need.
LaNorris Sellers is the quarterback of the future. OC Dowell Loggains will continue to look around the high school ranks, but South Carolina could look to the portal – as it did this offseason – for depth.
9. TE
This is still a need, just not as much as some other positions. The Gamecocks have some numbers here at the position. They will lose Josh Simon after the 2024 season but signed a quality freshman in Michael Smith and have some others in the intermediate classes.
