Fans and Celebrities Slam Sydney Sweeney for Controversial Campaign

Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign may have positively impacted the clothing brand, but fans and fellow celebrities are slamming the actress for its approach. The Euphoria star, 27, debuted as the face of American Eagle’s fall 2025 campaign titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.”“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My genes are blue,” Sydney said in one of the handful of advertisements released by the brand. The commercial concluded as a male narrator added, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”That particular advertisement had fans, and even fellow celebrities, mocking her on social media.Rapper Doja Cat mimicked Sydney’s message in the advertisement on a Monday, July 28, TikTok video. While reciting the lines, the “Woman” artist, 29, spoke in an accent similar to an elderly countryman. @dojacat my jeans are blee ♬ original sound - Doja Cat “Sydney will never be able to listen to Doja Cat again w/o thinking of this and that's a true punishment,” one fan wrote in the comments section of the post.A second person added, “Not Sydney Sweeney making Doja come out of hiding [laughing emoji].”Others pointed out that Sydney mispronounced a few words in the statement, while others were offended after decoding what they believed to be an underlying racist tone.“Mind you, she says ‘from parents to osspring,’” a third person pointed out.Meanwhile, other fans dissected the word play in Sydney’s message, as she toggled from “Jeans” to “Genes.” Some critics thought her memo was a form of agreement on genetic purity.“The ad has a double meaning. She even says that ‘genes are passed down which determine eye color etc’ it’s right in front of your face girl,” someone wrote. “Nassy propaganda is favoring blue eyes and blonde hair.”Nonetheless, some fans came to Sydney's defense and claimed that others were being “too sensitive.”“People are so desperate to complain about anything! Just an ad about jeans,” another person wrote. The original advertisement has since been removed from American Eagle’s social media accounts, but fans have saved the audio to their respective accounts.Parade has reached out to Sydney’s team for comment.🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬
