Hokies knock off defending NCAA champion Florida State in women’s soccer

Virginia Tech (9-3-2, 4-1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) rallied for one of its more notable victories of recent years, upsetting No. 6 Florida State 3-2 Sunday afternoon before 1,056 in Blacksburg.
The Seminoles (7-2-2, 2-2-1), who have won four of the last 10 NCAA championships, including last year’s, took a 2-0 lead on goals by Jordynn Dudley in the 50th minute and Lara Dantas in the 67th. But the Hokies struck back on goals by Sarah Rosenbaum and Kylie Marschall, tying the score with six minutes left in regulation. Taylor Price provided the winner with 3:08 remaining.
W&M falls to Charleston
The College of Charleston (8-3-3, 1-2-2 Coastal Athletic Association) spoiled William & Mary’s Senior Day with a 3-2 victory at Martin Family Stadium.
Emma Wennar scored twice to help the Cougars gain a 3-1 lead in the 47th minute despite a goal by Gabriella Kurtas in the 13th minute for W&M (7-6, 2-3). The Tribe’s Ivey Crain scored in the 53rd minute on a rebound for her fifth goal of the year, but Charleston held on.

Surging UVA wins at JPJ
Playing a rare match at John Paul Jones Arena, Virginia took advantage of the opportunity, sweeping Miami 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-16) before 2,892 fans.
The Cavaliers (13-2, 3-1) are off to their best ACC start since 2015. Elayna Duprey paced UVA with a match-high 12 kills, Kate Dean had six blocks and Milan Gomillion and Brooklyn Borum each had 12 digs. The Hurricanes fell to 11-4, 1-3.
NSU falls on road
Delaware State (6-10, 2-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) swept Norfolk State 3-0 (19, 18, 20) in Dover, dropping the Spartans to 6-9, 1-2. Gerren Tomlin had 18 kills and 12 digs for the Hornets. Jordan Lyons had six kills and 13 digs for NSU, while Alexa Harris had a team-high nine kills.

No. 3 UVA blanks No. 16 Louisville
No. 3 Virginia (10-1, 4-1 ACC) shut out No. 16 Louisville 1-0 in Charlottesville as Taryn Tkachuk scored in the 48th minute off a pass by Suze Lemmans.
The Cardinals (5-7, 1-3) pulled their goaltender in their final two minutes, but UVA’s Tyler Kennedy needed to make just one save for the day.

ODU takes sixth in Evie Odom tourney
Old Dominion finished sixth among 14 teams in the fourth annual Evie Odom Invitational at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach.
The Monarchs finished with a 12-over-par 292 for a 29-over 869 total.
The College of Charleston breezed to the team title at 2-under 838, beating runner-up Furman by 17 strokes. Charleston’s Emma Schimpf took the individual medal at 10 under, three strokes better than Princeton’s Olivia Duan. Barbara Car and Mariana Arronte paced ODU by tying for 15th at 4 over.
Richmond (+49) and James Madison (+63) were 13th and 14th, respectively.
