Nicholas Chavez Says Goodbye to GH
Well, now it’s officially official. When Nicholas Alexander Chavez left General Hospital to do another series and Spencer was presumed dead, fans wondered if it was just a leave of absence or something more permanent. After noticing that the actor’s name had disappeared from the soap’s credits, reports came in that in fact, Chavez would not be returning to the soap. And now he has spoken out about his decision.
“I’m so appreciative of the opportunity that GH gave me,” he shared on Twitter/X, “and I wouldn’t be as busy as I am professionally if it weren’t for the talented producers, writers, directors, and fellow actors. [Executive producer] Frank Valentini is a mentor and a friend, and we’ve had some pretty extensive conversations about my future on the show. While there are no current plans for me to return, we are still talking very openly about future possibilities for Spencer in Port Charles.
“Beyond the people I’ve already mentioned, I want to take some time to thank and honor the GH fan base… especially the Sprina fans… who must be THE most loyal and kind fan base in the universe of entertainment,” Chavez added. “Words fail to show the depth of my gratitude, thank you, I love you all very, very much.”
Back in June 2023, it was revealed that Chavez had landed a starring role as Lyle Menendez in the second series of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix anthology series Monster, which will focus on the Menendez brothers murders.

Chavez took over the role of Spencer Cassadine, previously played by Nicolas Bechtel, in July 2021. He last aired in the Jan. 31 episode when Spencer was drugged by Esme and the two were presumed dead after falling off of a boat into the Seine. As Port Charles mourned his loss and held a memorial service for the young Cassadine, fans remained hopeful that after Chavez finished shooting his Netflix series, he would bring Spencer back from the dead.
Unfortunately, in April, it was reported that Chavez would not be returning to GH after all. What this means for the future of the character remains in doubt. GH has not yet made any announcements about whether they’re planning to recast the role again or simply leave Spencer dead for now.
