Offensive observations from Ohio State’s June 5 recruiting camp
COLUMBUS — Ohio State hosted its first recruiting camp of the summer and it was one of the best lineups in quite a while.
The Buckeyes hosted numerous On300 prospects in the 2026 cycle and are finding more answers than questions for the offensive line board.
Lettermen Row dives into some camp observations about the offensive prospects immediately following the day.
Jamier Brown
On Wednesday, Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne wide receiver Jamier Brown became the first in-state 2027 prospect to earn an offer from Ohio State.
Brown has already built a reputation in the state of Ohio as a track star, he finished second in the OHSAA Division I 100-meter dash state finals last weekend with a time of 10.72, but on Wednesday he showed polish as a wide receiver. He caught almost every ball thrown his way and improved as a route runner as the day went on but more importantly, he was very coachable throughout camp.
Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline expects perfection from his receivers. While Brown was not perfect on Wednesday, he showed a willingness to take coaching and then put that coaching into practice on the field.
With what Brown showed both on and off the field at camp, it is easy to see why Hartline and head coach Ryan Day made the call to offer the in-state standout this early. Lettermen Row will have more on Brown and his interest in Ohio State.
Cooper McCutchan
Ohio State tight ends coach Keenan Bailey worked out several talented 2026 tight ends on Wednesday and Lettermen Row thought that three-star Cincinnati (Ohio) Archbishop Moeller tight end Cooper McCutchan was the most impressive.
McCutchan physically looks the part at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds but he also moved well during drills and consistently caught the ball. He is still improving as a blocker but is already a high-level pass catcher at the position.
Ohio State did not offer McCutchan on Wednesday but he is firmly on Bailey’s radar and even told Lettermen Row that he has heard from Ohio State commitment Nate Roberts.
Jerquaden Guilford
Three-star Fort Wayne (Ind.) Northrop athlete Jerquaden Guilford works with the same trainer as Ohio State true freshman wide receiver Mylan Graham and after Wednesday, it is hard to not compare the two Fort Wayne natives.
Guilford came to camp as somewhat of an unknown and he left campus with a scholarship offer from Ohio State, similar to Graham. He also has a similar to build to Graham at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds. Finally, Guilford and Graham win in similar ways on the field. Neither have blazing speed but both understand how to run routes and separate from defensive backs at a high-level.
Brian Hartline has already been building a bond with Guilford, the No. 448 overall prospect in the 2026 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking, and now he holds an offer from the Buckeyes. Lettermen Row spoke with Guilford after camp and will have that interview up in the coming days.
Christopher Vargas
The quarterback group on Wednesday was full of well-known names but one prospect that did impress the Lettermen Row staff was Lawrence (Mass.) St. John’s Prep 2028 quarterback Christopher Vargas. At 6-foot-4 and 175 pounds, Vargas does not look like a soon-to-be high school freshman and threw the ball well throughout camp.
Vargas already throws with a lot of touch and accuracy at a young age. He was also impressive with his ball placement on multiple throws.
Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly talked with him multiple times throughout the day and assistant quarterbacks coach Riley Larkin gave Vargas and his mother a tour of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center after camp.
The Buckeyes did not offer Vargas on Wednesday but he is on the coaching staff’s radar after his camp performance.
