4-star UF commit Jalen Wiggins shines at FSU 7-on-7 event, talks ‘Noles and more
Four-star defensive lineman and Florida Gators commit Jalen Wiggins was the star of Mike Norvell’s 7-on-7 camp Wednesday. And he did it by catching passes from quarterbacks instead of chasing them down.
While lining up at tight end, Wiggins showed off the athletic ability that has made him one of the top defensive line prospects in the country. According to On3, the 6-foot-5, 235-pounder is a top-100 player in the 2025 class, as well as the No. 7 defensive lineman and No. 12 prospect in Florida.
Wiggins has been committed to Florida since January, however Florida State has remained the main competition in his recruitment.
“Right now, I’m still trying to take a moment to figure out where these things are, and that’s what these official visits are for,” Wiggins said. “I know these official visits show all the stops, basically to show everything that they’ve got.”
Stanford, Florida State and Florida remain the main three schools in contention for the Tallahassee standout.
Wiggins will take an official visit to UF this weekend, and then take one to Florida State on June 21. He has already made his trip to Stanford.
As for what he is looking for, he said he has the same questions for the Gators and Seminoles.
“Basically, how could I fit into the scheme and everything?” Wiggins said. “How well will I fit for me personally, in my own mind? How well will I fit with the program?”
When it comes to Florida State, he said he already is confident about the coaching he would get from defensive ends coach John Papuchis and defensive tackles coach Odell Haggins. But he wants to see how important he is to the Seminoles’ class.
“Honestly, just the priority,” Wiggins said. “Everything else is good, and we know the continuity stays the same. They will always be there, I know that. As far as production, Coach Haggins, Coach JP, they always put guys in the league. Just being able to see if I can fit along well with them, and even the players as well.”
One positive for FSU is the addition of former Seminole great and Tallahassee native Ernie Sims to the support staff as a defensive analyst. It’s just one more connection between Wiggins and the Seminoles.
“Even when I went on a visit for the spring game, I know I didn’t stay the whole time, but I still got a chance to talk with him, even talk with his parents, which was really good,” Wiggins told Warchant. “It means a lot. I know Ernie Sims is a name held high here. Just the fact of even being from Tallahassee is one of the things that makes it great. That’s one thing that pokes out at me, being able to talk with him and share a relationship.”
Wiggins said he connects with the rest of the staff at Florida State as well.
“I feel like I have a good relationship with them,” he said. “I have been since my freshman year. It hasn’t been an on-and-off thing; it’s been a long relationship.”
And Wiggins enjoyed showing off some of his skills during the 7-on-7 event on Florida State’s campus and interacting with the staff.
“It’s been good. They still have been keeping in contact with me,” he said. “All of them texted me last night, being excited about me coming out today. So I feel like it’s been pretty good with them so far. … Basically, just have fun. They haven’t really seen me much at tight end. They thought I was going to be over at D-Line camp today. They just said go out, have fun, and show what I can do.”
