Volunteer 'elephant guardians' wanted in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The team behind the Great Elephant Migration is looking for local volunteers to guard its handmade sculptures.
On Thursday, Newport welcomed a display of 100 life-sized elephant statues, which will reside along the Cliff Walk from now through August.
The Great Elephant Migration team says volunteer applications to join their team of Elephant Guardians are now open to the public.

Elephant Guardians will engage with visitors to answer questions and offer further details on the exhibition, as well as provide on-site care for each elephant.
Applicants must be eighteen or older, but no other requirements are necessary.
Once an application is submitted and approved, volunteers will be able to select their shifts and create their schedules, as stated in the portal.
The following time slots are available for the week of July 9-14:
July 9: 1:30 p.m.–5 p.m.
July 10: 1:30 p.m.–5 p.m.
July 11: 1:30 p.m.–5 p.m.
July 12: 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
July 13: 1:30 p.m.–5 p.m.
July 14: 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.–5 p.m.
The Great Elephant Migration is a global fundraiser with a mission of amplifying Indigenous knowledge and inspiring others to share space. The herd was crafted by artists from the Nilgiri Hills in Southern India, according to the website.
The traveling exhibit will be crossing through North America through the summer of 2025.
