Ask the Expert: What On3 Scouts are saying about Ohio State wide receiver commit Quincy Porter
COLUMBUS — Ohio State is the destination for wide receivers across the country.
What wide receivers coach Brian Hartline has done in his time as the Buckeyes’ wide receiver coach is impressive. From recruiting, to developing and sending guys to the NFL, it’s the golden age of wideouts.
That run continued on Friday when four-star Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic wide receiver Quincy Porter committed to the Buckeyes.
Porter is the No. 31 overall prospect and the No. 5 wide receiver according to On3. The 6-foot-3 wide receiver picked Ohio State over Michigan, Penn State, Rutgers, Oklahoma and others. He committed to the Buckeyes the day he was supposed to leave for his official visit with the Wolverines.
On3 has Porter ranked higher than any other of the recruiting services — 247, Rivals and ESPN. On3’s director of scouting and rankings, Charles Power, spoke with Lettermen Row about the latest wideout to commit to the Buckeyes.
“For starters, his ball skills are certainly among the best that we’ve seen in the 2025 cycle to this point,” Power said. “His coordination and ability to make highlight reel catches is eye-catching to say the least.
“You watch his junior film and you just see so many spectacular catches and it’s really in a variety of ways. He’s making one-handed contested grabs, he’s tracking the ball over his shoulder, he’s winning jump balls, he’s fighting through contact. I think that ability to be open at all times given his catch radius and coordination and hand strength makes him a really dangerous outside wide receiver.”
Porter is one of two wide receiver commits in the Buckeyes’ top-ranked 2025 class. He and fellow Garden State wideout De’zie Jones make up the class for Hartline right now. While Porter is the big, outside wide receiver, Jones is certainly more of a slot guy.
Ohio State is getting a well-polished wide receiver in Porter. But he of course still has work to do once he gets to Columbus.
“As far as areas of improvement, it is the initial burst off the line,” Power said. “The top-end speed. You don’t really see him get caught from behind a lot, but I still think that’s something he can improve on.”
And what about the overall fit?
“I think relative to fitting into Ohio State’s wide receiver room, he fits into what Brian Hartline likes,” Power said. “I think [Porter] can line up all over the field, but from a skill set perspective, you have him as an outside receiver.”
