From The Road: Thoughts, intel on Savion Hiter, nation’s No. 1 ranked 2026 RB
*** Michigan running backs coach Tony Alford made his way to Woodberry Forest (Va.) School to see Savion Hiter, the nation’s No. 1 ranked 2026 running back, on Friday afternoon. Alford was unable to stay for Hiter’s practice, which I attended later that day, but he did get to check in on Hiter around lunch time and speak to his high school coach (Alford did not meet with Hiter as he followed NCAA rules). The two have a strong relationship dating back to Alford’s time at Ohio State and have kept in constant contact. Alford also has a bond with Hiter’s mentor, Adam McCann, and the two spoke on the phone following Alford’s stop at the school. It’s clear Alford has one of the best relationships with Hiter and his camp early on in this recruitment.
*** Hiter made his first visit to Michigan this spring and told me he plans to return to Ann Arbor this summer or fall. Getting him in for an experience in The Big House would be ideal as Hiter already had a chance to spend individual time with Alford and new head coach Sherrone Moore. Again, relationships are already strong here. The next step is getting Hiter more and more familiar with the program. Obviously, Michigan has a lot to sell to running backs, and Hiter was quick to mention U-M’s strong rushing attack. Hiter was even able to spend some time with NCAA cover boy Donovan Edwards during his time in Ann Arbor. Michigan’s elite education could play a role here, too, — yes, really —as Hiter attends one of the most prestigious private high schools in the state of Virginia and is a high academic kid.
*** I visited Woodberry Forest earlier this offseason, but this was my first time watching Hiter actually move around. He received limited carries in practice and was mostly asked to go 50-75% percent. However, I got a glance at his explosiveness, vision and ability to be a home run threat. Hiter is built well in both his upper and lower halves and can be successful between the tackles, but it’s clear he’s an every down back that can make plays as a pass catcher as well. Hiter caught a couple of swing passes during the team portion of practice and ran routes on air with the wide receiver and tight ends during indy. Overall, Hiter reminds me of… JK Dobbins. So it’s no surprise why he’s such a massive early priority for Alford. Dobbins had a similar build, running style and could also be a pass catcher if needed when I covered him as a recruit.
*** Woodberry Forest is also home to Top 100 2026 wide receiver Dyzier Carter, who just notched a Michigan offer this offseason. Carter is a dynamic slot receiver at 5-foot-11, 190 pounds and fits what U-M has looked for in recent cycles — think I’Marion Stewart. Carter has an array of crafty releases, is a polished route runner and is a plus athlete that also doubles as a high-level baseball player. Carter can continue to improve his straight-line speed, but he’s very quick and shifty in open space. Carter is just starting to build a relationship with the Michigan staff and is hopeful to make a visit this summer.
