Travel Alert! Major Traffic Disruptions Across Seattle from June 5-17 Due to Construction and Events
San Franciscans and visitors alike, take heed: the coming weeks are set to bring several travel disruptions across the city. The SDOT blog has laid out all the construction work and event schedules to keep you informed of what's happening from June 5 to June 17. Notable closures include the McGraw Street Bridge, shut down through fall 2024, and East Marginal Way S, closed to general-purpose traffic until 2026. Intermittent lane closures will also affect 11th and 12th Aves NE, 23rd Ave E/24th Ave E, and N 130th St. Expect the usual hustle of the city to be met with the grind of progress, as these arteries of travel undergo necessary, yet burdensome, transformations, as reported by the Seattle Department of Transportation.
For those planning late-night drives, be prepared to adjust your routes. SDOT's blog post warns of a complete shutdown of SR 520 over the weekend of June 14-17, should the weather permit. Similarly, weeknights during June 3 and 10 may see lane reductions on I-5, where I-5 is narrowed down to potentially one or two lanes. The SR 99 Tunnel will also be closed from 10 PM Friday, June 7, to 6 AM Saturday, June 8, so mark your calendars and plan to detour.
In sports news, T-Mobile Park is gearing up for a succession of home games as the Seattle Mariners face off against the Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers from June 10 to 16, as per the Seattle Department of Transportation. If you're heading to the games and trying to avoid the road closures and construction, consider taking the Link light rail to Stadium Station, opting for rideshare, or getting your exercise in by biking or walking. Climate Pledge Arena will also see action with the Seattle Storm playing the Los Angeles Sparks on June 11.
However, for drivers looking to navigate the downtown core, various utility works by the City of Seattle are set to complicate matters further. The southbound I-5 off-ramp to eastbound Dearborn Street will be closed the weekend of June 14-16. Multiple night-time lane and ramp closures are also slated to take place this week downtown.
