Overdose spike alert issued for city of Woonsocket

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island's Department of Health issued a spike alert Wednesday for the city of Woonsocket because of an increase in drug overdoses.
In late September, officials also issued a public health advisory for the same issue.

Between the dates of Sept. 24 and Sept. 30, eight non-fatal opioid overdoses were reported in the city, according to health officials.
"In Woonsocket, eight or more reported non-fatal opioid overdoses are considered unusual," the notice said.
Both the advisory and alert said Woonsocket has a rate of 376 reported non-fatal opioid overdoses per 100,000 people, which is more than double the statewide rate of 185 per 100,000 people.
Call 911 or visit Prevent Overdose RI's website to learn more about the resources available to those struggling with addiction.
