North Providence boxing club empowers kids, teaches discipline
NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The general rule of thumb is you can't talk about Fight Club.
But you can always talk about the Good Boys Club, which meets weekly at Legendary Boxing in North Providence.
"The Good Boys Club is a program that's built on mentoring," trainer Tessa Herbold said. "It's something that we felt very passionate about."
Legendary Boxing's Michael McRae told 12 News the Good Boys Club is designed to empower children to be the best versions of themselves.
"It combines physical activity, mental toughness and a sense of teamwork," McRae explained. "When we all come together in this gym, magic happens."
Trainer Adonis Teixeira decided to join the Good Boys Club so he could teach the next generation the importance of treating others with kindness, respect and dignity.
"These kids are learning how to get better emotionally and physically," Teixeira said. "It's an important aspect of life, to always be strong."
Herbold said the Good Boys Club meets on Mondays from 5–6 p.m.
"We work on building their confidence while also teaching them boxing skills," Herbold said. "It's a great way to give back to the community."
"The kids really seem to enjoy it," McRae added.
Herbold said the children are being mentored not only by adults, but also by high schoolers like Teixeira.
"The times aren't getting any easier and for these kids have an outlet with older mentors they can rely on ... I think it's extremely important," he said.
Legendary Boxing owner Jarrod Tillinghast's goal is to eventually make the Good Boys Club a scholarship opportunity for high school seniors.
"I have the opportunity to give these young kids something to hold onto," Tillinghast said. "It's something I always wanted to do."
Even though the latest session of the Good Boys Club is about to come to an end, another will begin in the fall. To learn more, contact Legendary Boxing at (401) 263-6600.
Herbold added that most of the children don't have gloves or equipment of their own, so Legendary Boxing is always accepting donations.
