Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Debuts In Will County
PLAINFIELD, IL — Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has officially made it to Will County.Parents across the county can now register to have free age-appropriate books mailed to their children from birth until their fifth birthday. Local officials and community leaders joined representatives from the Imagination Library and the State of Illinois Monday at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA in Plainfield to celebrate the program's launch. At the event, Amazon also announced its support for the program by presenting a check for $30,000."I'm incredibly proud to announce that every child in Will County under the age of five now has access to this free, book-gifting program," Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant said in a statement. "Early childhood literacy is critical for long-term success and this program helps children get excited about learning. Imagination Library is an opportunity for us to connect more children with the gift of reading and to build a countywide network dedicated to promoting the power of literacy."In the 30 years since the Imagination Library Program was launched, children in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland have received more than 250 million free books, according to a news release from the Will County Executive Office. The effort to bring the Imagination Library to Will County began shortly after Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois State Board of Education announced a statewide expansion of the program, which matches every dollar raised locally to help county-wide programs raise funds and register children. As a result of the state match, every $16 raised locally sponsors one child to receive a full year of free books tailored to their age, allowing 73,000 children across 77 counties in Illinois to receive monthly books, according to the release. "The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a wonderful opportunity for our young children to have physical and tangible access to books in print," said Joyce Gronewold, executive director of special instruction with the Illinois State Board of Education. "To pick up a book, to turn a page. This opportunity and access is the start of early literacy.
