Catt in command on the Potomac

MARBURY, Md. – Following up a strong start on Day 1 of the Toyota Series Presented by Phoenix Boats Northern Division event on the Potomac River, Michael Catt moved into the lead on Day 2. An ounce back with 20 pounds, 1 ounce the first day, Catt sacked 17-4 for a 37-5 total on Day 2. Heading into the final day, he leads by a little more than 2 pounds over Tommy Dickerson.
On the Strike King co-angler side, Roland Gittings added 12-11 to his total from Day 1 and leads by 1-11 with 29-11 to his credit.

On the Potomac River, there is grass on the main river, and in the big creeks, which are essentially shallower and more protected versions of the main drag. In the backs of those named creeks, like Potomac, Mattawoman and Aquia, there are a collection of feeder creeks that flow into them. Usually with sparser grass and lots of pads and wood, they’re sharply affected by the tide. Truly fishing in the creeks, and not on the grass flats, is not a super common way to win, but it may earn Catt a big payday this week.
“What I’m fishing is a 200-yard stretch, I’m just lethargically fishing it, it’s super slow,” Catt said. “I’m just pitching the laydowns, and then later in the day, when the tide is out, I’m going up to some bends and drop-shotting fish.”
Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, Catt has a lot of experience with tidal water as he’s at home on the St. Johns River, which is heavily affected by tides.
“It was a lot harder today, it was tougher than the original days, but I think it was because of the weather,” he said. “It was a little stingier today, I think with the west wind pulling out the water so fast. I fished pretty clean, I only lost one fish that I think could have helped me a little more.”
After cordially sharing water with Jay Burger on days one and two, Catt will likely have room to roam on the final day. With a solid edge, he’s on the cusp of a win that could kickstart his fishing endeavors.
“Having 20 pounds yesterday, that’s hard to do here already,” he said. “I feel pretty good, I really do. This is something I’ve been wanting for a long time, and I really think I can do it. Tomorrow the weather is going to be like it was in practice, and I had a really good practice, so I’m really excited to get back out there.”
