Affordable Housing In West Orange: Forum Draws Large Crowd

Find out how to post announcements or events to your local Patch site.On Thursday, May 2, the Township of West Orange held its first Housing Forum hosted by the Department of Senior Services’ Laura Van Dyke, Olive Ross, and Noelia Perez, at the West Orange Public Library.Over 100 people were in attendance to learn more about the various affordable housing options in the community and throughout the state. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions directly of the program experts.The first presenter Samantha Hennessey from the Alpert Group, manager of the New Affordable Senior Housing Building at 46 Mt. Pleasant Ave., spoke about the new facility, its amenities, and the application process. Those wishing to be notified of when applications will become available can go to West Orange Senior Housing - The Alpert Group. Next on the agenda was Margaret Schoenebaum, manager of the West Orange Housing Assistance Program. Margaret gave valuable information on the Housing Choice /Section 8 voucher system wait list online application process, which went live on May 3, 2024, at 8:30am for the first 300 applicants.Following Margaret, the “mystery” of the affordable housing process was revealed by Frank Piazza of Piazza & Associates. Frank gave an overview of the affordable housing process in West Orange, as well as specific details on how to apply for one of the 64 affordable housing units at Stone Hill in West Orange. And while some neighboring towns have adopted this type of housing option, Geniece Gary-Adams, the West Orange Director of Planning and Development shared some insight as to the timeframe when West Orange might be coming onboard and the types of ADUs that would work best in the Township.To conclude the evening, attendees were introduced to a new affordable housing alternative “HomeSharingTM Inc.” Although new to some, HomeSharingTM Inc. has been around since 1984. Steve Nagel, the Executive Director HomeSharingTM Inc. explained how this innovative housing program helps homeowners (providers) looking for economic help, service, or companionship by matching them with compatible persons (seekers), who are seeking affordable housing.
