Coleman and Shelby explained the details of their house construction in a video for a tiny home builder (@FloatingOrbProductions).
The couple’s 420-square-foot home only cost $40,000 to build because they used a handful of money-saving options.
“[A] tiny house is like [having] roots, but not quite, because you can tear them up and transplant if you want to,” Shelby said.
Both Shelby and Coleman said they lived in tiny homes in the past.
Their current home stands on a 10-foot by 20-foot trailer. Shelby said the trailer’s permit costs around $20.
She also built an extra four-foot bunk overhang on the top of the home that makes her “feel like a queen.”
The couple said they used snap-and-lock steel siding, cedar boards, and a custom bright yellow door.
Large windows allow streams of sunlight to burst into the small space.
However, the window doesn’t open because the couple chose a cost-cutting option.
Getting the proper casement would have cost $4,000 to $5,000 more.
“I would love to have this window open, but its something I decided not to do because of funds,” Shelby explained.
“There are better things I can do with that [money].”
The home has a full kitchen, a living room, a second-story loft, a bathroom, air conditioning, and a laundry unit.
The interior is covered with a mixture of dark wood accents and white clapboard walls.
Dozens of plants, color pillows, and area rugs add house-warming visual intrigue.
A skylight allows the couple to enjoy time on the home’s rooftop deck.
“It’s really such an intimate time, because you’re in the tree tops,” Shelby said about the outdoor space.

TINY HOME TURN UP
Thousands of tiny homes have come online as housing prices continue to skyrocket.
The median house price in the US was $412,000 in September, According to Forbes.
The median price has lowered from past quarters. However, the upfront costs of purchasing a home have remained high.
The Feds have used interest rates as a blunt tool to cool down inflationary housing prices over the past several quarters.
While the overall prices continue to become more affordable, financing a home at the current interest rates could cost buyers hundreds per month.
Tiny homes have become a popular solution to the increased costs.
The homes typically cost less to build. Their environmental impact is smaller than the median American home.
The cost and ecological benefits of tiny living have inspired homeowners to rethink their housing plans.
For example, here is a college student who built their home for under $30,000.
Also, this homeowner has listed their tiny home on Airbnb.
