The park located 30 miles west of Gainesville confirmed it was temporarily closed on Sunday morning and officers searched for a woman thought to be connected to the shooting.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement were on the scene searching for an “outstanding subject” while also identifying witnesses.
“The park is temporarily closed. We will let everyone know when admissions are available,” Ginnie Springs said in a Facebook post on Sunday.
“The Sheriff’s Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FLDE) are currently on scene and the investigation is still active,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook on Sunday.
“We are seeking to identify any witnesses and one outstanding subject that was involved.”
“If anyone has further information, witnessed the event, knows the identity of the subject involved or photographed or videotaped the subject earlier in the day or the event, please contact Lt. Cumbie at (352) 463-3410” the Sheriff’s Office added.
The suspect was described as a woman in her early 20s around 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with a muscular physique and long braids.
“She had been staying in this area all day and was last seen walking toward the exit of the park,” cops said.
However, an update later shared that the Sheriff’s Office was no longer seeking the identity of the female suspect as it thanked witnesses for their help.
‘HORRIBLE CRIMES’
It was the second shooting to take place at Ginnie Springs over Memorial Day weekend.
A post by the Sheriff’s Office on Monday morning revealed that another incident occurred in the area on Friday, May 24.
“Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office was called upon to respond to not one, but two separate shootings inside Ginnie Springs,” officials said.
“One during the overnight hours of Friday, May 24, and another during the overnight hours of Saturday, May 25.
“Both incidents are currently under active investigation by both GCSO and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).”
The Sheriff’s Office clarified that no more details will be released at this time due to the ongoing investigations.
“The men and women of GCSO and their neighboring law enforcement agencies have worked tirelessly, around the clock, for days on end to investigate these horrible crimes and to bring those responsible to justice,” it added.
‘OUT OF CONTROL’
“This place is out of control. Not family-friendly at all,” one local said in response to the park’s closure.
“Went many years ago and it was bad then. I can only imagine how much worse it is now. Such a shame because the area is beautiful.”
Others spoke about the impact Memorial Day weekend had on crowds and the atmosphere in the park.
“Ohhhh this is the serious party weekend, since college is out,” one wrote.
“The one weekend we went there with the family only a few people died.
“They warned us going with a family, but man it was crazy.”
“We have lived here our whole lives and it used to be a safe great place but the past 20 years it’s out of control which is why none of us locals go there anymore!!!” another said.
“Every holiday someone is killed or is severely injured due to the drinking and fighting these people come here from everywhere and think no rules apply so so sad !!!!”
One noted that the park on Memorial Day weekend is “a whole different experience which I choose to not be a part of.”
The U.S. Sun has contacted Ginnie Springs and the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office for comment.
