Washington County Advances Projects, Gambling at Fair, Emergency Fund Grant, and Infrastructure Boosts
Washington County moves forward on several projects and initiatives, bringing a mix of community enrichment and infrastructure enhancement to the local scene. On June 4th, the Washington County Board of Commissioners gave the green light to a range of proposals, from public health grants to road improvements, according to a recent announcement. Highlights include the Bayport American Legion Post 491's approved off-site gambling at the county fair, an increase in Law Library fees, and a sizeable grant aimed to bolster emergency preparedness.
Getting ready to support the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce Food Truck Extravaganza event on June 15, the Bayport American Legion Post 491 will enhance the festivities with pull tab gambling activities. The Washington County Board's approval pushes this application into the State Gambling Board's consideration. This move is set to potentially add a spark of excitement to a much-anticipated community gathering. Meanwhile, the board didn't forget to cast their vision further ahead, approving a $208,175 Emergency Preparedness and Response Grant to help ensure the community can better prepare to respond in the event of a public health crisis. Funds will back critical training and coordination spanning a five-year period starting July 1.
Infrastructure also saw an injection of focus and funding. The Stonebridge Trail will witness major improvements, with a bridge from 1966 slated for replacement. Kimley-Horn and Associates were contracted to offer their design services for this $2.9 million project. In a similar update, Valley Paving, Inc. secured a contract for resurfacing work on 50th Street and the attached multi-purpose trail, promising smoother and safer journeys for residents.
Complementing the more tangible updates, the board proclaimed June 1 through August 17 as Summer at Your Library. This seasonal initiative supports the Washington County Library's learning program aimed to combat summer learning loss. Activities and reading programs are on the agenda, promising rewards and grand prizes for engaged participants. The fee structure for the Law Library is also set to be revamped, rising from $12 to $15 to help cover service costs and deficits thickened by the pandemic's economic impact. This increase, as "approved by the Law Library Board of Trustees," will target maintaining quality legal services for the county residents, including numerous free legal assistance programs.
Additionally, the county is not just looking at the roads but to the future. A new corridor study of County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 96, awarded to Alliant Engineering, Inc., looks to enhance the pathway from Highway 61 in White Bear Lake to Highway 95 in Stillwater. This diligent planning process will consider everything from highway capacity to bike paths, setting the stage for a grand revamp come 2028.
Residents can tap into the full stroke of developments and details online by visiting the Washington County website or reaching out to the respective department contacts provided in the county's official announcement. The thread tying these decisions together is clear: a drive to enrich community well-being and lay down the groundwork for enduring strength and service across Washington County.
