San Francisco Man Convicted for Kidnapping Woman in Mission District, DA Brooke Jenkins Hails Justice System Victory
San Francisco District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins has announced a recent victory for the city's justice system following the conviction of Michael Stortz, 36, for the kidnapping of a woman in the Mission District. The verdict handed down by a jury marks a close to the terrifying event that occurred last fall, bringing relief to the community and the victim involved.
In the early hours of October 3, 2023, Stortz was involved in the kidnapping of a young woman near the intersection of 24th Street and Balmy Street. According to a statement from the District Attorney's Office, the assailant observed his victim, who was using her phone, before forcefully grabbing her and dragging her fifty feet down the street. Thankfully, the woman managed to escape and immediately reported the incident to the police. The diligent work of the San Francisco Police Department led to Stortz's arrest on the following day.

"The jury's verdict delivers justice for the victim and ensures that Mr. Stortz will face consequences for his crimes," Jenkins stated, as per the District Attorney's Office, acknowledging the jury for their decisive role in the trial. The efforts of Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Yang, along with the support from the investigation and legal teams, were recognized as pivotal to developing a strong case against Stortz.
During the trial, the victim demonstrated courage by reporting the crime and facing the courtroom to recount the ordeal. "I am grateful to the jurors for their service and thoughtful deliberation in this case", Yang mentioned, as cited by the District Attorney's Office, highlighting the significance of the victim's testimony and the efficient police work in swiftly apprehending the perpetrator. The conclusion of the trial has brought a palpable sense of justice and safety to the citizens of San Francisco.
Stortz remains in custody, with sentencing scheduled for later this month on June 27. The community now waits for the final judgment, hopefully bringing an end to this disturbing chapter in the city's ongoing efforts to maintain safety and order on its streets.
