Sting Factor: Rating the Antwann Hill commitment to Memphis
On the surface, the commitment by 4-star quarterback Antwann Hill of Warner Robins (Ga.) Houston County to Memphis on Saturday doesn’t look great for the Florida Gators. But how much did it truly sting? Today, we take a closer look at this development and give it a “Sting Factor” grade. We’ll do this by rating Hill’s value as a recruit to Florida in the overall big picture, from 1 to 5.
-A 5 would be the highest impact possible, in terms of playing ability, long-term program impact and perception.
-A 1 would mean I believe this recruit to have a minimal impact both in the short term and long.
GRADE: 2
Look, Hill is a nice prospect. Big frame. Strong arm. High IQ. And yes, the Gators would have taken him. But this is not the type of commitment that will cause sleepless nights in Gainesville. That should not be interpreted as a knock against Hill. Like I said, I really like him.
Antwann Hill was not expected to compete for a starting job at UF for awhile
But the thinking here is that Hill is somewhat of a developmental prospect. And in case you hadn’t heard, Florida signed 5-star quarterback DJ Lagway in the 2024 class. He’s already running with the second team in Gainesville and almost certainly will be the starter next year. So if we’re being honest, it’s unlikely Hill would have had a chance to make an impact for awhile at Florida. And Hill made it clear in recent weeks he wanted to play early in college. His decision Saturday didn’t surprise anyone.
If all goes well for Lagway, he might be in the NFL by 2027. That almost certainly would have been Hill’s first chance — barring an injury to Lagway — to have a shot at starting in Gainesville. We stress the “have a shot” part. That’s because Florida already has a 4-star quarterback committed for the 2026 class in the strong-armed Will Griffin of Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit. It’s no sure thing Hill would beat out Griffin. In fact, Griffin, to some of our sources, already is the more polished of the two (but that’s clearly subjective).
Now, where this stings some if from a depth standpoint. Florida really does need a 2025 quarterback signee so it doesn’t constantly have to build the middle and back end of its QB room from the transfer portal. That’s not easy to do. The best quarterbacks entering the portal expect to start — not sit on the bench. That often doesn’t leave much else out there.
Still, there is plenty of time for Florida to find a 2025 quarterback. The Gators continue to heavily recruit 4-star Florida State commit Tramell Jones of Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin. As we’ve mentioned previously, he’s been in Gainesville three times that we know of since April and very possibly could return to campus for a game — or even an official visit. Meanwhile, the Gators have started communicating with TCU 4-star commit Ty Hawkins and would like him to visit. Sources tell Gators Online that other quarterbacks are on Florida’s radar.
Having Lagway on the roster no doubt has scared some quarterbacks away. But the upside for a talented 2025 quarterback is that the Florida QB job could be open after the 2026 season. And the Gators don’t currently have a ton of depth behind Lagway.
In sum, this one just doesn’t seem to sting all that much. Antwann Hill is poised to have a bright future at Memphis. But the Gators should be fine.
