She Climbed Out A Bathroom Window Of Her Pennsylvania Home In 2022, Possibly Due To Her Medical Condition, And Has Been Missing Ever Since
Candice Caffas is 34-years-old and lives with her parents at their Pennsylvania home, located in the 9100 block of Mount Pleasant Road in Union Township.
She is diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), a rare genetic disorder that causes a range of physical, mental, and behavioral problems, according to the Mayo Clinic. One key symptom of PWS is constantly feeling hungry, which normally starts at the age of 2.
Candice was a long-standing client of The Arc of Crawford County, a social services organization located in Meadville, Pennsylvania, that aids individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
But, on July 16, 2022, she vanished after fleeing her home through a bathroom window, and her loved ones haven’t stopped searching for answers ever since.
According to Candice’s mother, Carol, the Caffas’ home was always locked to prevent any potential runaway issues with her daughter. On the night Candice disappeared, her mother also last saw her before going to bed.
“I saw her at 10:00 p.m. that night in bed as I slept with her. It was at 3:07 a.m. I heard the noise, and she wasn’t in bed,” Carol recalled.
The noise she heard could have been one of two things: the screen on the bedroom window falling or Candice’s feet hitting the ground outside.
Either way, one thing is certain: Candice climbed out of the bathroom window and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.
“I’m just trying to keep going. I have to find her. It’s just really hard… it’s just really hard,” Carol said.

Candice was known to visit places with water, and when she’d left home in the past, she was eventually located near water. But Candice never went missing for this long.
As for her motives for climbing out the window, she may have been searching for food due to her medical condition.
Following Candice’s disappearance, there were multiple sightings of her later that same morning. Witnesses reportedly saw her walking on the railroad tracks on State Game Land #213 on Route 285 in Greenwood Township, Pennsylvania, between 5:30 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. She was reportedly heading toward Conneaut Lake.
State police subsequently conducted large-scale search efforts – ranging from Candice’s home to the Geneva swamp. These searches were aided by K9 units, firefighters, volunteers, and even aviation and scuba teams.
However, even after conducting these searches and checking traffic cameras on Interstate 79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, investigators found no indicators of her whereabouts.
So, on July 23, 2022, state police called off the large-scale efforts after authorities claimed they had exhausted all credible leads. Still, Carol and her husband, John, refused to stop searching for their daughter.
“Every day, I’m always over there. It’s John and I,” Carol explained of their personal search efforts near the railroad track.
“We’ve had drones over there. We’ve had horses over there, dogs over there. I don’t think she’s over there,” she continued.
“I’m just afraid someone picked her up, but I’ve been told by the police that nobody has been abducted in Meadville. I don’t feel that’s true. She’s not out there on her own – she can’t be.”
Candice’s family has continued posting and distributing flyers in hopes of raising awareness about her case. Information about her disappearance was also placed on billboards on Interstate 79 and Interstate 90.
“We’re just lost without her. We just miss her. We just want her home,” Carol said.
According to Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), the investigation is still ongoing. Additionally, authorities are still asking for help from community members in hopes that new information or leads will further the investigation.
Candice is four foot nine, weighs about 95 pounds, and has brown hair. She was last seen wearing orange shorts with a floral design, a purple short-sleeve shirt, and purple/blue sneakers.
Candice wears blue metal-framed glasses and is missing her front teeth. She reportedly doesn’t respond well when people call her name and tends to shy away.
There is currently a reward of $12,500 being offered for information that leads to Candice’s discovery.
If you have any information regarding her disappearance, you are urged to contact the Pennsylvania State Police at (814) 332-6911.
