Gas station sells $1.99 a gallon gas as a ‘thank you’ to drivers – sign to look out for at the pumps

A GAS station wanted to thank its customers after years in business, offering a deal drivers could not pass up.
To show its appreciation, the station offered gas at $1.99 a gallon – a move that shocked those who passed by.

A sign on the pump read: “Thank you from my family and me for your continuous support. Customer appreciation day is to let our customers know how thankful we are to be a part of this great community and their loyalty.”
“Actually was on my way to work, [and] said, ‘Let me swing in, get some chips,’” customer Zrlina Hannah told ABC affiliate WXYZ.
She was not prepared to see the price change while on her quick trip to the Michigan BP gas station.
“[I] looked up and was like, $1.99 gas?”
The last time the average price of gas dropped below $2 nationally was in March 2020, right at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before that, it hadn’t been lower than $2 for four years, according to AAA.
“I’m sure he’s gonna be jammed… from cars coming from everywhere,” Hannah said.
Owner Hassan Beydoun has owned the shop for two years, and wanted to thank customers.
“This is our way, me and my family’s way, to give back and show our support back to this community,” he told WXYZ.
“We still sustained the same amount of business throughout the construction, our number did not go down, so it shows you the loyalty of our service and our customers.”

Beydoun said his favorite part about the promotion was seeing everyone’s reaction to the deal.
“I try to give the best prices I could and the best service I could, try to keep the place as clean as possible,” he said.
“At the the end of the day this is a family to us, not a business.”
The national average price of regular gas is $3.13 a gallon as of July 29.

High gas tax states

Here is a list of the states with the highest gas taxes (including local fees and federal excise taxes) in the US:

1. California: $0.86 per gallon
2. Illinois: $0.84 per gallon
3. Pennsylvania: $0.80 per gallon
4. Indiana: $0.74 per gallon
5. Washington: $0.70 per gallon
6. Michigan: $0.66 per gallon
7. Maryland: $0.65 per gallon
8. New Jersey: $0.60 per gallon
9. North Carolina: $0.59 per gallon
10. Virginia: $0.57 per gallon

Per Visualizing Energy.

In Michigan, the price came in slightly higher than average, at $3.19, according to AAA.
In 2024, the national average was $3.50.
The highest recorded price for regular gas in the United States was June 11, 2022, at $5.22.
Last month, the White House touted the drop in prices in a press release, saying, “Americans are seeing the cheapest summertime gas prices since 2021 — more than 20 cents lower than one year ago — as President Donald J. Trump delivers on his promises of lower prices, stable inflation, and higher wages.
