The barn like structure on Altcar Road is now a huge hit with fast-food from across the region.
The restaurant has become a hit on TikTok, with customers labelling it the “Disneyland for fast food fans.”
Two customers posted about the drive-thru on TikTok and said: “We’re at the UK’s biggest McDonald’s in Formby – it’s a whopper.
“It’s enormous, it looks like a big barn. It’s the Disney Land of McDonald’s.
Franchise owner Mark Blundell, known locally as the “Maccies King of Merseyside”, said: “It was an empty and existing restaurant building which we converted into a McDonalds rather than replace with one of our traditional buildings.
“We think the Formby store is a fantastic looking and unique building…the Formby site had taken over the previous site of a drive-thru independent diner, which was massive.
“There is a lot to benefit from such a big welcoming atmosphere and our customers can enjoy a light, airy space with no shortage of available seats.”
Although the restaurant boss told the Liverpool Echo that he was a little baffled by the outlet’s cult status.
He said: “It is fantastic to be such a destination for not just our local customers but to customers around the country. The site is a unique site that people are intrigued by.”
McDonald’s has more than 1,270 restaurants in the UK and employs more than 120,000 people.
The first drive-thru restaurants opened in Fallowfield (Manchester), Dudley, Neasden (London) and Coventry back in 1986.
Today, around 1,000 McDonald’s restaurants have drive-thru facilities.
It comes as the fast-food chain recently opened its second-ever net zero carbon branch in Louth, Lincolnshire.
Its new revolutionary features set it apart from other restaurants.
The fast food drive-thru area has Smart Digital menu boards – which are topped with solar panels.
Electric charging points are also available in the car park.
The interior has also been decorated with recycled materials.
McDonald’s previously announced a huge menu shake-up earlier this month.
The change saw these six items axed from the menu:
Big Tasty – £5.29 on its own or £6.89 as a meal
Big Tasty with bacon – £5.89 on its own or £7.49 as a meal
Cheese Melt Dippers – £2.29
Cheese Melt Dippers Sharebox – £5.99
Celebrations McFlurry – £1.79 for regular
Festive Pie – £1.29
