Memphis Mother Charged After 6-Year-Old Brings Loaded, Stolen Gun to School
In an unsettling incident at Geeter K-8 School in southwest Memphis, a 6-year-old student was discovered with a loaded firearm in his backpack. Memphis police responded to the scene at approximately 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, where it was found that the child was passing the weapon around to other classmates. As reported by Action News 5, a school staff member recovered the gun, which was identified as a stolen item.
The mother of the student, Ke’Erinie King, age 22, was subsequently arrested and faces charges, including child abuse and neglect, carrying a weapon on school property, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. According to WREG, King admitted the gun to belong to her, claiming to have purchased it from an unknown individual. Despite the gravity of the situation, she was released from jail on her own recognizance the same day and is expected to swiftly return to court on the following Friday morning.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The student was detained by police, highlighting ongoing concerns around safety and gun possession in school environments. FOX13 Memphis documents that an MSCS Resource Officer was alerted to the student having a gun on school grounds, which set off the chain of events leading up to King's arrest and charges.
